More than 3 hive locations

I've always wondered why there are only three hive locations in (most) ns maps. Why not provide 4-6 locations for the hive, of which only a limited number could be built? This would give the alien "commander" more options when choosing where to put the next hive. Of course, this is mostly a choice of the mapper, but would be more effective if it was taken into account by the game engine and done in the official maps.

This also would bring up the possibility of having 4th and 5th hive abilities, but that is a different topic.

Marines will have no chance to control all 5-6 hive locs.

I agree, although i know you mean it so aliens can only use a max of 3 hives it would be almost imposible for the rins to cover all of them in an attempt to stop the aliens getting more than 1 or 2.
that said i do like the idea, it would be cool to have a more varied choice of locations but i dont see how it could be implemented without some serious ballance issues.

I think a small increase, like 4-5 possible hive locations with a max of 3 hives would be nice
Keeps marines from locking them down too quickly, and allows for the possibility of stealthily getting one up behind enemy lines (since it'd be more effective for the 'rines to block alien access to multiple hives than to lock them all down)

Don't forget the 'power grid' design. Both the Marines and Kharaa are going to have 3 locations to build a com chair/hive. This way both sides can attempt to block access to the others main building. Also, if it works, you might be able to build your hive/com chair on the opponents side of the map.

What about the Hive "Commander" being able to put like 2 or 3 hives anywhere? in them map

There will be specific spots where you can build cc or hive. At the moment I'm planning to make map with 5 of these locations, so there would be huge amount of fight in the middle of the map. Well the idea needs testing

The core question remains, can the marines stop the aliens from getting 3 hives if they have more locations then the 3 they currently have in NS1 design. I mean map control over a larger area or more areas seems harder to do, requiring more resources and build time. Which will make it easier for the aliens to indeed get 3 hives...

Still thinking with the NS1 mindset is what we do too much :D

While I agree the "two hive" lockdown is a valid strategy, I don't see why it MUST be possible on all maps. There are other ways to win.

Besides, even with only two hives, you still might not have enough marines to do this. So, with enough players (and multiple comms) having a few extra hives to lock down is not unreasonable.

I think it was map designs that had the limits of 3 hive locations, in NS1 it was mor prominent how the gameplay was designed, but in NS2 it feels like it's a little bit more free-form IE: hives have to be built on "tech" points just the same as cc's.

So what's to stop there being 8 tech points on a map?

I'm planning a map just so ... it's all about strategy when it comes to choosing hives. Each comes with pro's and con's.
But alas, have to wait for mapping tools and more details from UWE to see if this is even possible...
