Some questions from a newbie

bare with me
Hey, I just barely found out about this game and I had some questions.

1.) How long has it been in development so far? I have had a lot of games I was highly anticipating be canceled (Demonik, Possession, Exanimus) and I don't want to get my hopes up and then have them shattered all over again. Determining how long it has been in development will give me a clue of how close to release it may be and the chance it has of being canceled.

2.) How many different playable classes will there be for the aliens?

3.) Are there any in game videos or screen shots yet? If so, where can I find them?

4.) Is there an estimate of a release date? Q1, 2 , 3 or 4 of 2010 perhaps? I'm sure there is no set in stone date, but at least an estimate?

5.) I have an NVidia Geforce GX2 7950 dual 512 MB graphics card. Will this suffice for near-max settings? If not, any suggestions on what to upgrade to?

6.) How big are the maps and how many players on each map? How many maps will be shipped with the initial release?

7.) Can I buy a physical copy in store?

Thanks!

    1. There has been development since October 2006 with the major investment to drive further development coming in March 2008.

    2. Same amount, 5. In addition, there will be an alien commander.

    3. There is a teaser at http://www.naturalselection2.com/. You should look harder before asking questions.

    4. Fall 2009 is target. Current guess is October 31st, Halloween.

    5. Min Specs are: A 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, a DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows Vista/2000/XP, mouse, keyboard and of course, an internet connection. We are working hard to make sure NS2 runs well on average hardware without having to upgrade your machine! We will be releasing NS2 in the fall of 2009 (Northern Hemisphere).

    It should suffice.

    6. I think four was the target number for maps. The maps are going to be a little bit smaller than NS1, but that's mostly because they will be more compact.

    7. Nothing said yet, but probably not.

Thanks, guys, but isn't 6v6 a little small for the # of players? I was imagining at least a total of 16 - 18.

NS1 allowed up to 32 players on one map, although the ideal point for balance was only 12. For NS2, the max number of players will likely be very similar, but the dev team has stated their goal to make the "ideal balance" not so dependent on the number of players, so it will be much more reasonable to play with larger numbers of people.

I would not call that small.
Natural Selection is supposed to be tactical but in my opinion, the larger a game gets or the more players you have, the less clear the situation becomes.

FYI it's "bear" not "bare", unless you're asking for us all to get naked with you. With this crowd, I don't think that's what you want though.

6v6 is "small". It's perfectly playable though.

But for NS1 I think the best games are 10v10 to 12v12. Below and the map becomes quite scarce and above that and the map becomes crowded and, indeed, less clear.

NS2 aims to be compatible with any number of players, I doubt the 6 vs 6 optimization will occur again.

I hope that it scales well with players, I love 6v6 size and 12v12 size. Same reason I pub and pug in tf2

I think the second this game is out there will be a good couple dozen 32 player servers up. In fact, every server I ever was a regular on had it set to 32, but it wasn't always full.
