I'm now a paying Apple Developer :O
Well almost. I got all the way to the "Take my $99 you jerks" step of the process and was greeted to a lovely 404 message.
But soon I will be a full-fledged Apple Developer, capable of building & distributing apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms.
I think I'll make a tip calculator.

I made the plunge to the tune of $700 (600 for the mac mini, 100 for the developer license), but haven't really made much of it yet.
If you start considering a game-related project and need an additional programmer, send me a PM. I'm looking for some side projects to work on (with the goal of portfolio fodder and maybe a bit of cash).
$800 for a MacBook, and then $100 for the license. :X
If I price my app at $0.99 I have to sell 1,400 copies just to break even at this point. Yay?

It really shouldn't be too hard to break even as long as you follow through and actually make it. My facebook game had more than 1400 people in the first week... though, those people weren't paying a dollar to get it.
edit: Oh there's a really good online book for learnign Objective-C if you already know c++
Here it is! http://pierre.chachatelier.fr/programmation/objective-c.php
edit: fix grammar fail
Though, I guess if you can't cleverly suggest an ad or paying service with your application you'll have to sell it to make money.
In fact the way Apple have taken BSD UNIX, pulled its pants down, dressed it in a ###### outfit and put it out on the streets is worthy of a public flogging.
1. the keys do different things! Home/End don't work the same as on windows, ctrl+arrow doesn't jump words....
2. mouse acceleration curve is weiird. like moving through mud.
3. XCode sucks. I hate the UI.
1 and 2 can be fixed if you find the right programs and stuff...
In other (super exciting) news, if you're willing to spend another $400 or so (for MonoTouch), you can use XNA and C# to develop iphone games!
