Skulk Sonar

<div class="IPBDescription">secondary ability</div>I was thinking it would be cool if skulks secondary attack was a sonar like ability - kind of like bats.

The skulk would let out a loud shriek or scream (not too annoying)

and then all of the marine players would get highlighted on your screen like with Scent of Fear - but only for say 5 - 10 seconds.





What this would do for the game is that,

skulks become better hunters early on in the game,


but at the same time marines would be hearing these strange shrieks coming from out of vents and echoing out from distance hallways and rooms - CREEPY! :)


it lets the skulks identify enemies, but it also lets the marines know they are about to be hunted and brings some tension into the game play :)

    It sounds kind of silly to give the bat-like ability to anything but the bat alien :p

    Anyway, as long as Scent of Fear is still in the game, then I think I would rather have the aliens have to decide whether or not to tech in that direction rather than giving skulks effectively the same ability for free.

    haha well i guess i forgot about the lerk!

    but the ability is hardly free, your potentially giving away your hiding position to see where the marine is, and its only for a few seconds

    With hivesight on, it's like having sonar. Although if there is enough light so you can look through your eyes, then there is no need for sonar ;)

    I like this idea, but more so for lerks than skulks. And instead of 5-10 seconds, I think the marines should only appear for a brief flash. This way you can't really track them, but you have an idea of where they are, and for continuous tracking, you would have to keep screaming, giving you away each time. Also, I don't think it should highlight the whole map, but a shorter radius of maybe 100-150 feet.

    I like it, too.

    For the Skulk it can be something like a "very good hearing" ability, too - The next marine and direction of him is shortly highlighted to give the player an hunting advantage.
    But Sonar fits, as well.

    Like Cricket said only a very short duration and a short radius.
    Sounds very promising.

    I like the idea, but people would spam the attack over and over and over. A 15 sec cooldown would solve that (i hope) and you shouldn't be able to see the marines for more than 3 seconds. This will encourage skulk pack hunting, because the skulks can take turns screaming.....

    The Ultrasound, used by bats, cannot be heard by the human ear.

    The tiger-moth jams the bat's echo by emmiting ultrasound itself. Kinda like radar jamming.
    So it would be not that hard to jam the aliens "sonar".


    And by the way, how should the soundwaves go around corners and so on? They only work in a straigt direction I think, and won't work after hitting a wall.

    yeah but thats real life :P

    i said "sonar like" ability - i'm suggesting an idea to enhance the gameplay, the sonar part is just a way to describe it, but it doesn't mean it has to mimic science :)

    there are few movies where cave monsters scream to use a sonar like ability, and its creepy as!

    What you mean is scent of fear and it's already implemented in NS1. The way it works is discussable, but scent is perfect as a detection method.
