Does TSA employ cloning technology?

<div class="IPBDescription">Will all the marine faces look the same?</div>We've now seen some in-game shots of marines.
Will the marines all look the same, or will there be ways to make player's face look unique?
BTW, I don't discriminate against clones... and it would make sense to clone the best soldiers to send them into battle - you know, like they did in NS1.

A little TSA story:

In the wars depicted in NS1, cloned warriors were used so as to not endanger the general population. A rigorous competition took place to select the very best soldier of all humanity. The winner had to be exceptional in a multitude of areas:
- being physically fit and having super reflexes,
- be an excellent commander AND follower, a commander AND a grunt soldier, depending on what the situation required;
- be proficient in a multiple weapons technologies, including prototype equipment, such as the newly developed and untested Jet Pack and Heavy Armor.
- And in addition to all that, the same soldier had to adjust to the alien threat, which had a great variety of forms, each with deadly consequences

A tall order for any person to deliver. But the one person who wins would have to represent ALL humanity by fighting without any other human help. This marine could rely, literally, ONLY ON HIMSELF (other clones of him), to push back the alien insurgence. His body and mind were replicated many times, so when he died, after a short while he could jump back in with newly acquired knowledge about the enemy. During the war, the human losses were immense, but fortunately they were all suffered by ONE MAN.

That man is know legendary, and his voice recognizable by everyone as he speaks his famous line: "Commander, I'm standing by."

As we know, that man got the honor to represent all humanity, even though a woman was a close second in the tournament. Until recently, she had been virtually unknown, as the world only saw the one, the marine. Now, we have seen her page on a few TSA documents and rumors are going around that she may be employed in the next encounter with the aliens. She performed only slightly worse than the current marine in the tests, but the reality can scarcely be replicated in a testing environment! Still, there are those that doubt that she could live up to the alien threat. Some are just happy that they'll see at least a bit of variety when looking at combat reports from the alien frontier.

While the conversation mostly surrounds the rumors of a female soldier joining to protect all humanity, only few, very radical people have considered that soon the general population may be called on to help in the fight for humanity. To most, it seems unimaginable to see anyone besides the hero marine, whom they've watched for almost a decade. These radical groups suggest that there may be an influx in new recruits joining the battle, which would diversify the people fighting on the front. But, these rumors are simply laughed at and ridiculed.

The next great alien conflict is nearing. Soon everyone will now the truth!

Its actually just a video game.

According to "canon" it's just a veritable zerg rush of marines (that happen to have the same build and jaw), but this idea sounds kind of cool.

Well yeah. NS1 skirted the problem by just making the marines wear visors. There was some variation though, as we saw jaw regions of different skin color. Many of us have been hoping for either procedural variation in spawned marines or maybe even a user customizable scheme. Either way I think the removal of the face visor means UWE has some extra work to do to keep the game immersive :P

Of course, this is "just a video game." Still, for some reason people stress "realism" and immersion. It seems to me that if identical marines are running around the map without any explanation, it will reduce "realism" and immersion for these people. The simple explanation - CLONES! (like nanites!) - may be insufficient. Hence, the reason for a more elaborate story.

It seems most of you (except JAmazon and Align) don't care whether marines have unique or identical faces. Obviously, gameplay-wise there would be no difference.

If you don't care about the game lore, then at least answer this: would you prefer unique faces and voices or would identical marine faces be acceptable?
The purpose behind the story was to show that with an explanation the developers would not have to make a face-generation-algorithm, saving them time.

How many FPSs have unique faces on every character?

    Waste of time.

I still prefer the Idea of remote controlled "mindvessels" (cybernetics).

This is partly why I prefer it when the games don't show the faces of the characters, it tends to look better than having a dozen duplicates walking around.

Plus they can have cool helmets, the combine in HL2 do this very well, it makes it easier to model, and better to look at, and fits the theme nicely.

OP, I see your point, but for me it's not priority. Maybe later.

I've seen console games that let you use the camera attachments to take a pictures of your face and then it puts that picture on in-game character model (Rainbow Six Vegas?). The new Marine Helmets are actually quite tailored to implement something like this. However this would run a bigger chance or destroying immersion when players start getting creative.

+1 vote for greatest response of the year...

Customization of a character would be cool, but at this point I could care less - the game will still be great without it, and could be tweaked on later down the road to accommodate it after the release!
