Those walls were all made with rock props, just filter for "rock" in the prop browser.

This is a lot of fun to play with, almost compensates for my lack of actual mapping knowledge. I've hit a few random crashes, and not being used to the whole 'no brushes' thing means I'm probably doing things really inefficiently. Still, with time...

question to people- how do you light the large rooms? I have made a large rock filled room and when I use spots its way too hard and when I use omnis I find they lit without shadows and don't look proper. Do we just have to use lots of each type?
By the way, the performance is STELLAR. I have a large large room filled with the refinery floor grate boxes (tops are the grating, inside are pipes and what not), we are talking like 50 of them, and there is zero slowdown... it looks fantastic. I can't wait to see these screenshots with the atmosphere stuff enabled.
This is my first attempt, did a generic corridor. <a href="http://img109.imageshack.us/i/corridort.jpg/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/6881/corridort.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
Having performance issues with the editor, unable to go full-screen on perspective mode and bad lag. But I think that's just cause my graphics card is old :( Anyone else having trouble with spotlights crashing the editor?
I see with grate textures you have too create two faces then flip one with the texture assigned to each face to get shadows to show through. Is this the official way of doing it or will this be implemented so that only one face is needed?

The spotlight crash is a known issue, so far it has only happened to testers using 7900 series geforce cards (which coincidentally is what I have, which is why I didn't put any spotlights in the tutorial >.<). I would post your system specs in the bug report sticky so Max and Kurt have it for reference if you have a different card.
I'm getting an odd problem whenever I try to move with mouse2 + WASD before anything is actually laid out in terms of geometry. The grid turns verticle and I place walls instead of floor, anyone know how to get the grid back on to the horizontal plane?

Yeah, geometry is placed according to the direction you are facing. When starting a new map it's best to place something without moving the camera so you can use it as reference.
How exactly do I add something to my layers? I figured selecting something, like my floors, and then selecting "Add Layer" would place all my floors into one layer but no dice. Do layers only effect entity/prop?
Out of curiosity, some of my models in the list don't show up when I try to place them and they have no portrait picture, does anyone else get this or is it something on my end? Should I try updating the tools or is there a way to back up client files?

No, there are rock wall props.

Might post up some pics in a bit.

I have never maped, only to apply effects of light.

It looks like the wall is a cityscape skybox :)

Looking good everyone. :D

my attempt at remaking the starcraft 2 trailer room, awful, this is my first "map" ever. i guess i must begin with standard corridor and stuff :p
EDIT: Grargh, Mendasp always does this to me. He's right, too; you can't add level geometry to layers, yet.
Use the selection tool and press the "check sign" after selecting your prop. Atleast that worked for me when removing lightbulbs.
Edit: Insane beat me to it.

That is interesting, so you can make individual faces rather than just blocks?
