Problem folling video tutorials

When attempting to follow the video tutorials ive hit a snag,

When the guy explains how to draw a rectange onto the wall (which he later extrudes to make a hallway) when i attempt to copy this, instead of two surfaces like he gets, it simply adds three new edges to the surface.

Anyone know what im doing wrong?

Try dragging the rectangle from another corner/vertex (start drawing from another location). Wouldn't split into two surfaces for me either in some cases. Hope that helps.

(this is my new account, so im kyle_katarn but thats v old :P )

I simply cannot get this working, i have watched the tutorials over and over, and i see nothing im doing diffrent, however i cannot make a new face, only three new edges.

    This is very frustrating.

    Any help is welcome.

For some reason this site wont function for me either, none of the quote or option buttons work :/

I have remade a level four or five times already and still no matter how i do it, it wont work

(this was a reply to the post above mine)

    Edit:

I have done some tests, and found that if i draw the rectangle in the middle of a wall it works fine, however attempting to do as the video shows and draw it from the bottom fails.

Try using the Line Tool and draw the shape you want. Look for the help colors for orientation. Then when it's 'cut out' you can make a hallway out of it.

I had the same problem as the OP, however, the line tool worked. Don't forget your 4th line at the bottom.

In most cases simply use the Line tool when trying to slice a polygon such as a rectangle. Say you have a 256x256 face that you want to slice a door frame out of, instead of using the Rectangle tool to box out the frame and extrude just use the Line tool to cut across the polygon horizontally. I've found this far more effective at the moment, especially when dealing with larger faces, than using the rectangle tool on the relevant polygon.
