    There were ads in CS?

Do you mean server MOTD ads? Or actual in-game ads, like on billboards or something?
  • poweripoweri Join Date: 2006-11-26 Member: 58724Members
Some servers in HL/HL2-based games/mods hack their own advertisements in-game by creating additional entities through plugins, but I'm not aware of any in-game advertising tied to the actual games as-is.

Although CS has the ability to have ads through permanent sprays, the game you are looking for is BF2142, which has dynamically created ads on billboards in the middle of the battlefield.

I expect a lack of advertisements as I am buying the game with money, so the only ads should be relevant to the subject matter (like how modern racing games have real current sponsors to mach real race tracks, futuristic racing games have futuristic fake sponsors). Any in game ads need to fix the context of the game and be unobtrusive while still being believable. I doubt any modern companies would exist that far in the future so they would look out of place.

There's a discussion about this here:

    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=107773" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....howtopic=107773</a>

The vast majority of players in that thread had no problem with ads in the readyroom.

I don't see why Frontiersmen cannot drink Pepsi. As long as the ads are not annoying (like flash ads with lots of animation) or out of place, I have no problem with this.

That said, if I see ads, I expect to pay somewhat less for the service. Unfortunately, that's not usually what happens.

You kidding me, dude? Think of it this way: Games normally retail for $40 - 60. You're getting NS2 for $20. It's already more than "somewhat less" than the standard price.

...except that 90% of Natural Selection 2 purchases were of the 40$ variety instead of the 20$. Plus the "standard" price of 60$ would be absolutely ridiculous considering it lacks the content a triple A title delivers, not that UWE can really do anything about that considering they're independent. That isn't even the point anyway, a lower price doesn't dictate whether or not there will be in-game ads or not. I've played four games where in-game ads were added sometime after it's release, and the <i>vast majority</i> of players loathed them. I sincerely hope they don't choose to use in-game advertisements but you can't rule it out.

I've always been one for immersion and a pure universe/canon, and I just don't see how either of those can be achieved if I see a fricken' Panda Express or Coke ad behind a charging Onos. However it would be interesting if the ads were giving a Natural Selection twist, making them look as if they did indeed still exist within the NS2 universe.

As I said, for those who didn't want to read the thread I linked to, the ad's in that suggestion would be for the readyroom only. I think it's a solid idea.

Don't put in ads. They will inevitably detract from the immersion of a Sci-Fi style game and tarnish the visual cohesiveness.

EDIT: Great, the forums are broke. Anyway, my thoughts on the matter:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><!--quoteo(post=1735424:date=Nov 2 2009, 01:30 AM:name=ryknow69)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ryknow69 @ Nov 2 2009, 01:30 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1735424"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->This, every person against gaming advertising says this, and I never get wtf they mean.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

When you use Fileplanet for free, you have ads. When you pay for a subscription, you don't. So even though I was nice enough to fork over my cash I still get to 'pay' every time I visit the readyroom and see ads for Viagra.

Why are you suggesting in-game ads? I propose this:

    1) Every month UWE sells out their front page to a new sponsor, and the entire site for that month is themed with their corporate logos and such. Forum icons could be replaced with Whoppers!

    2) Every sig and avatar on the forums is required to have something to do with the sponsor of the month. And every third post on the forums is chased by a bot post with a flash ad on it.

    3) IRC should have several adbots added that periodically PM special deals to every member of the channel. In addition, after posting a single ad, they get a new mask and name so you can't ignore them.

    4) We should require all forum accounts have a valid, verified phone number associated with them, and then sell all the personal information of every account UWE has on their databases to advertisers.

    5) When you buy a copy of NS2 as the product or preorder, you should be directed to dozens of endless pages of 'special offers' you must meticulously go through and have a certain quota of offer signups before your payment is processed.

    6) The installer could offer us several helpful deskbars, toolbars, icon sets, and system scanners integrated with the NS2 .dlls themselves for maximum helpfulness!

    7) Every time you launch the NS2 .exe, we can be forced to watch an unskippable stream of advertising for several minutes. Whenever you quit the game, NS2 helpfully launches several instances of browsers linking to the 'PRODUCT OF THE DAY!'

    8) Whenever you die during the game, a popup for various peripherals like FATAL1TY XXXTEREME GAEMER MAUS pop up to suggest ways to IMPROVE UR GAEM.

    9) If you're playing at night, health packs could be replaced with bottles of Mountain Dew GAME FUEL!!!11

    10) Maybe NS2 itself could just constantly run a program that monitors every action on your computer and sends it all in an unencrypted stream to advertisers as well.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

For some reason the idea of ads in IRC, the site, and forums is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, but in-game of all places is a GREAT IDEA.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->You're getting NS2 for $20. It's already more than "somewhat less" than the standard price.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Except it's $20 for a lot of very good reasons, none of which involved alternate revenue streams. If ads show up I'd expect a partial refund to everyone.

Ads/sponsorship makes me want to look at anything theyre plastered on a lot less.

While I'm opposed to ads and think they're ugly as hell and detract a lot from whatever theyre on I don't actually mind the in-game ones in CS 1.6. I'm not sure what all you people are talking about that theyre not there, I guess you havent played it in the last ~3 years. Valve have put in permanent signs on dust2 to advertise things like l4d. If they're on a website I wouldn't care because I'm sure like most people I've managed to train myself to ignore them.

However, I'm not so sure devs putting ads in-game is a sound plan, especially for an indie developer's debut who has to rely a lot upon reputation. They do turn a lot of people off and would probably lose a fair number of sales from not only NS2 but also subsequent games. IMO the best course of action with this is to make the game ad-free and leave ads/sponsorships to the leagues/LANs/top teams. This might not be direct revenue but people see that teams/leagues have sponsors and assume that its obviously to be taken seriously and will go and buy it. People see ads in-game (especially a debut, labour of love type game such as NS2) and it will make people respect the devs a lot less. Yes, it's unfair especially for money-squeezed indie devs but 90% of the market don't differentiate between bigger studios and smaller startups with their buying habits.

This + continued consistent free content updates and bug-fixes is the best way to go about not only sales but keeping a solid reputation of respect which will stand them in good stead for future releases.

For example TF2, even though not my favourite game ever, I would say was worth my money and would encourage others to buy it because of the huge amount of content released. The amazing support was the reason I bought L4D. That was a huge mistake. Two out of four maps worked in versus mode and very slow/almost broken dev promises about future content and usermade content and then they go and announce L4D2 which I'm boycotting because of the shoddy support/abandonment of L4D. Until Valve can prove that they'll not release half-finished games and give them proper support again I'm not going to be shelling out for their products.

Yeah, its cheap but I dont spend a lot of money on games, I generally don't play single-player and the few I do buy I want a good deal. I'm sure there are a lot of other people who feel similarly.

Yes. There will be snickers bars advertisements EVERYWHERE. In fact, your lmg will fire snickers bars as a form of ammunition.

No there won't be any adds.

The people who buy the dedicated server will also sponsor the streaming of the advertisement, I'm not sure if I can support that.

You obviously don't play a ton of games, because there is plenty of rubbish out there not worth the high price tag. IMO I will probably get more entertainment out of NS2 then I did out of most games I played in the last two years.

$20 is a good price, I paid $40 NS was amazing and it was free so I gave some back.

I paid £18.00 for Operation Flashpoint 2 : Dragon Rising, fair price for a couple of days gameplay, shame multiplayer is naff.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the price for NS2.

I do think that there is something really really wrong with the price for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 @ £35 for 5 - 7 hours gameplay.
and Left 4 Dead 2 @ £27 is a rip when you have LFD1 as well.
Ace games but they can get stuffed.

40$ is actully a real good price for this game, ive seen games that should had 20$ price tag but sold for much more.
NS2 is worth the money cause i know that ill be playin it more than anything else, hell i lost my old steam account and created one couple of months ago i just bought left 4 dead 2 and last week i bought HL1 AGAIN just to be able to play NS1 ( havnt played it in couple of years and i missed it ) hell am spending more time with ns1 than l4d2.
