Surely You Gest...

caught with your pants down eh?
Guys.... Come on......

I just got off a server where I got 5 gestation kills in one game. I shouldn't be getting that many gestation kills; nobody should. I could understand it happening in the first week of play but it's been almost a month right?

This was just too funny. I'm at the marine start on hera and I see a skulk scurry through the base. A bunch of us open fire and he slips through the vent thats partially covered with crates. The rest of the marines go back to what they were doing but this skulk still has a blue circle around him and I notice that it has stopped just inside the vent. I hop over the crates to check it out and lo and behold, what do I find but a plump, juicy pink nub of pulsating flesh. My hmg tears into its layers as it sputters with green globs of juice and then across the console I see:

"NOOOOOOOOO!!"
"NOOOOOOOOO!!"
"NOOOOOOOOO!!"

spammed over and over again.

Rule #1 Don't gestate near the marine start. It's never a good idea.

So later on me and some of my ha/hmg buddies are about to take the Ventilation hive and we run into a wall of lesser lame and a skulk peaks out from behind them and runs down an adjacent corridor. I figure this skulk isn't gonna just let us shoot down the wall without causing us some trouble so I risk some wall of lesser lame spittle to peak down the corridor. Lo and behold, what do I find but the same skulk gestating right in front of me! He's just out of view of the rest of my comrades who are peppering the wall with gunfire. I guess he thought the wall would cover for him while he slipped into something more comfortable. Nevertheless I turned my hmg on puree and whipped that pink ham plate into bacon bits. Console says:

"**** me"

Rule #2 If marines are nearby, don't gestate. Don't expect immobile defenses or even other players to protect you.

Several other times I was just walking down the hallway, straying a little ways off from an outpost I just got done building when I find an alien gestating right smack in the middle of the floor!

Rule #3 Never gestate where a marine can just stumble upon you. That includes floors and easy-to-reach vents or anywhere that theres a marine outpost nearby.

The funnest thing to do is to shoot the gestating nub a little and then circle around to the other side and watch as the gestating nub's eyeless stare follows your every move hoping against hope that you may stop to reload and give it more time, or run out of ammo, but please no don't take out the knife! Please anything but a knife kill!! SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!

When it comes to gestation, Murphy's Law is in effect. Please don't take anything for granted. Don't bet your hive's life savings on the wager that a marine isn't right around the corner... because he probably is.

Normally if I see an alien gestating I just wait till it finishes. There is no honour in killing a helpless enemy IMHO. Sure, it´s an easy kill, but I experienced by myself how nasty it is when there is a marine on top of you, killing you with his knife.

I gestated to an Onos once, right by the CC in ns_hera. I flew in there as a lerk, the marines didnt spot me. Once up the top I took a chance, gestated, and it worked. I took out their CC before any of the marines noticed what was going on with a bit of handy distraction by a fade down below). This just shows that occaisionly, gestating behind the enemies defences can open up tactical options. Was it worth the risk? Yes. Would I have been annoyed if I had been killed while gestating? Of course not, I chose to do it there.

It actually also works very well if you have cloaking and they have a platform or something in their spawn and you've got lots of resources. Cloak as a skulk and use single leaps to move while staying cloaked. If you can get behind the CC, evolve to a tough class and hit the hell out of it. Or you might even try single bites to stay cloaked and attack it, if you have several years.

Or if you really want to take a chance, you could try to hide somewhere as a gorge, pop up 5 towers at once, and get them up before the marines can arrive. If you cut off the CC this way, you'll be a wonderful distaction.

Oh I loooove sneaking behind CC, evolving to gorge, and spamming towers everywhere. Man it's just so fun, too bad I can't hear the screaming on the marine team's side.

"Holy ****! Guys come back to base!!"

"Guys get **** back here theres enemy towers in our base!"

"How the **** did those get there?!"

    marine dies

"****! **obscenity** I can't kill these things on my own **** defense chambers!"

    "Spam medpacks spam medpacks!!!"

    marine dies

"Wtf **** commander you aren't **** helping get out here and help!"

"Kill the gorge you **** n00bs!"

commander gets out of chair, dies.

    "Wtf where's our commander?"

"Get back to **** base we're under attack you idiot!"

"**** we lost **obscenity** aliens r too powerful."

    ahhh one can only dream.

    I love doing this too.

But nothing is more satisfying than waching in horror as marines come around the corner while you're gestating, then finish just before you die.

Marine: Oh boy! easy kill! (starts shooting)

One tactic that I got from this form is to run into the marine base and cloak next to their CC, then evolve into an Onos and wait for some cover-noise.

I don't know if many people know this, even if you are cloaked while gestating, you aren't silent, you make horrible squealchy gestating sounds. Even though you think you're safe, its easy for a marine to work out where you are and begin shooting.

But there is something about gestating around the corner of approaching marines that gets the adrenaline pumping. I do it all the time, upgrading with marines just down the corridor is such a rush...

I just love when that happens. Once a marine ran past the defences, spotted my cocoon, enjoyed my helplesness a while and started knifing me. Of course I finished evolving just before he killed me. I bet he needed a new pair of underwear after that experience

i cant count the number of times ive been saved while gestating because i was cloaked. literally about 10-20 times it has happened

the most memorable time was on Hera at the Ventelation hive. i was at the upper sewer tunnel (near the hive's node) and i was evolving skulk-fade. i had completely forgotten i was cloaked. i hear those foot steps and freak out because i know my doom is coming. *clomp* *clomp* *clomp* he comes. he turns the corner, looking into the hive, and looking RIGHT AT ME. he looks left. he looks right. nothing. im still alive. he rounds the corner and BAM! its Fade time! thats one less careless marine for the worlds '

seriously though, i dont know many people who walk ALL around a room to make sure its free of cloakers. but still...

You know I honestly think its great that a lot of you gestated in situations where I recommended the opposite and thrived regardless. It shows that there is no one right answer to one solution. Quite often when faced with a dilemma you have to use your instinct as well as your common sense in this game. But I was trying to make a point that gestating in certain areas can be very dangerous and at the very least you should have these dangers in mind. So next time you post, going on about your various exploits, please make sure you are sending the right message and keeping the younger, less experienced kharaa in mind.

Easily the worst gestation spot was when I was wandering around, waiting for 44 resources to evolve to Fade. The moment I got 44, I immediately gestated - then noticed half a second later that there was a Turret shooting at me.

    I died, of course.

Lesson: Dont wander around focusing on your resource bar. =/

one time i was simply evolving back to skulk from being gorge (some "really smart" nsplayers on my team all decided to go gorge, and i figured id better not be part of the problem), and a lone marine comes walking into the halway where i was gestating off in a little nook. he starts firing at me, and firing, and firing. then he stops. he just stops and stares at me. so i finished gestating and ripped him to shreds. he came back over chat and said he had to reaload.... i just laughed. i think sometimes marines forget that there are *aliens* inside those little pink balls. my suggestion would be.. shoot from far away.

I don't know if anyone has seen this but I came around the corner and there was that little pink blob. I started firing and it started jumping! Imagine a little pink ball bouncing up and down in one place then got popped. Haha! I wish I had a demo.

Once, in NS_caged i was wandering around as marine and i see a egg by a resorce node, i figure he is going Gorge to build. So i walk up and start knifing him, i would have shot it but i was low on ammo. About 2 seconds later i see a fade poping out of that defenceless pink blob and choping me into yummy bite size TSA snacks.

Not to get off topic... no well ok I am... but the funniest thing I've seen was when the game ended with the marines winning and then when we all went back to the ready room I saw a gestation nub slithering over to the marine portal. I've seen that a couple times but it's always funny, hehe.

But to keep on topic, uh don't gestate if the game is about to be over cuz uh, its a waste of time! Do a xenocide or something.

Hehe, i've gestated to Onos, Lerk and Fade in a marine base before. Was on Nancy i think.

I was lerk, we had 3 hives so i went to the marine base and hid behind their turret fac, and gassed their Infantry Portals non-stop. Got quite a lot of kills then got bored of it.

So i started biting the fac then all the turrets went down, so i just gassed the whole place more. Then I went behind their main base res tower, with no turrets functioning i gestated to Onos! LoL, now that was funny, no one noticed me! Too bad i didnt get a screen. I had NO cloaking BTW cuz there was an observatory right next to me.

Yeah, I think it's much different if you're going for a simple upgrade rather than changing species. The fact is if I start an upgrade with no marines in audible range, the chances of one running up, noticing me, then pouring enough damage to kill me before I eat him as a Fade is almost nonexistant.

I did finally get off the "go onos cloaked in their base" thing I've heard about. It was a lot of fun. First I needed to do some rushes and take down the obs, so the comm didn't notice. Then used leap to move in as a skulk, only moving when someone attacked their spawn so the sound wasn't noticed. Then hid, began going onos, and notified my team to attack and prepare to surprise the marines.

I once got caught with my pants down (shell up?) just outside our first (undefeded) hive. I was getting a quick celerity upgrade, when a marine wanders in all alone, with nothing but him and a fleshy egg in front of him. I was half finished with the upgrade already, so when he started firing, I lived. I hatched just in time to switch to leap and chew the shocked expression of his face. He then proceeded to tell me that was impossible. Heh heh... leap is my god (I'm a polytheist, though, I worship skulks, celerity, carapice, scent of fear, xenocide, and leap )

Hmmm, another thing is don't get cocky at the end of the game. I remember one time on bast, we had managed to just get our third hive. I fly over to the airlock to wait for some buddies to back me up. There's an egg gestuating and a fade running around. Almost immedietly the airlock cycles and an HMG totting marine comes out. If I hadn't dropped that umbra the egg would've probably died no mater how fast i was with the spore cloud and spikes. In fact three marines attacked him in row. Finaly he hatched, turned out I'd saved a 70rp onos. Not exactly a game turning event since we had the pressure on high but it certainly would've annoyed the guy to die in that situation.

sometimes , if we get the 2nd hive fast and 2 fades are going to attack a respoint fast , i evolve
    behind a corner .

1 or 2 times a hmg killed them both and it wasn't really funny .

but if u have ur 2nd hive , u can spend 13 res for keeping your first real fighters alive
