According to an interview on Gamasutra, Special Edition preorders count for ±95% of the sales:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The studio is selling two preorder packages through its site: a $20 standard version, and a $40 version with cosmetic in-game additions. As it turns out, 95 percent of preorders have been for the more expensive package, which Cleveland admits has "really surprised" the team. One of the bullet points on that second-tier package is "Our eternal gratitude."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's really impressive, I wonder how that compares to other store bought titles from the big names. The only special edition I've bought in the past was for Starcraft.
-Full version when it comes out (direct download) -First access to alpha, beta and tools -Special all black marine armor whenever you play online -Our eternal gratitude

This may not apply to you but for a lot of the community buying the special addition was a no brainier. The first NS was such an amazing game that the $20 extra I spent on the SE didn't come down to whether I wanted to play in the alpha or have black armor it was really about supporting the team.
I'll echo what Blue21 said - i've played the original NS from initial release to date. I've had that much fun playing it (and still play it daily) - and it's still the only game that can make you sh*t yourself when you get ambushed after playing it for so long - that I felt it only right that I went for the SE.
I enjoyed the original so much that for me it was worth every penny of the $40 - even if they have to abandon NS2 for any reason I won't feel too badly done to, because i've more than had my money's worth from the original NS :-)
I'm one of the seemingly few people who prefers combat maps these days, and I still ordered the SE knowing full well that there are no plans to include a combat mode.
