Not sure whether the mods might think this is worth stickying and updating as and when people report a specific card to save polluting other threads...
my ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 also gives me black textures. Since the map editor uses the same engine the game will does this mean I won't be able to play the game?

The editor is a pre-alpha release. I wouldn't worry about it yet.
Perhaps it would help if you included what Driver version? As always, make sure they are updated to the latest version. http://game.amd.com - 9.11 came out last week.
As for me: Dual HD4670 using 9.10, haven't had any issues thus far. I'm about to update to 9.11... Hopefully it doesn't break anything. lol

There's a lot of rendering optimisation that has yet to be included. Don't worry about it for now.
I think this may be a limitation of the ATI hardware. The hardware in question doesn't support dx9.0c, and this game is probably being coded with this version of DirectX in mind, not being compatible with previous versions....
For example Bioshock you need a Directx 9.0c card to run it properly.
Anyone with a x1600 series or x1900/x1800 series having the same problem?
