Do those with the standard edition still get alpha?

Or are we out of luck?
Since the alpha is coming soon
NS2 Standard Edition
Access to beta and tools
but not
NS2 Special Edition
First access to alpha, beta, and tools
Since there hasn't been much talk about it, I want to know if Unknown Worlds will enforce the above. Once the alpha comes out, if I can throw out $20 and play it, then I will, but if not, I'll keep on waiting until the beta.

You can upgrade your edition for an additional $20 dollars by e-mailing UWE.
If you're hoping for demo of the game or some-such, that definitely won't be it. Beta should be much closer to playable.
Thanks.
Thanks.

When it's ready.
You could potentially give it to alpha testers. I mean I can't really see anything blocking that route, that is if you really don't want to spend 20 more bucks.

Alphas are by definitionl "playable," just far from finished.
Mass Effect 2 here I come!
think of how appreciative UWE will be from the extra money, if everyone did this then the game would be even better, and maybe out even faster
...which does not necessarily have to be "enjoyable". It might/could/will be crashing every 5 minutes (freezing your whole PC, just so that you can see that nice Windows Logon screen more often), marines win all the time but when one update disables commander mode for the next week, skulks get stuck at every corner...
I hope it's not that bad, and I don't expect it to be. I guess it's at least good enough for running around and polishing your own map so that it's ready when the beta arrives. :)
And we'll all point and laugh at the rare person who didn't back UWE early :P
I'm sorry, all I heard there was "I want free stuff."
You're probably right, there will be a lot of people making premature decisions like that thinking alpha/beta conditions = the finished product. I also guarantee that by keeping alpha limited to people willing to put money down, 99% of those people who would jump to conclusions are going to be held back till a better version of the game is out. Dunno about you, but I didn't pay for the SE to get alpha access - access to an alpha isn't worth $20. I paid because I loved NS1 and NS2 looks good.

And I don't know about you but I don't make rude assumptions based on reading a single post without getting the larger picture of what someone is trying to say. I pre-ordered the standard version of the game without knowing there was a SE of it. I bought it not because I simply loved the ns1. I want to support UW as a small indy company and I want to have a playable copy of the game so that I test the maps I make which could in turn help them. So is that all you are going to do? toss them some money
FFS I feel like I'm a dilemma that probably isn't even there. If I do upgrade to SE is there a change I can use the engine soon after alpha release? There can't be that many that have the SE pre-order, right?
NS2
Standard Edition
$19.95
and
NS2
Special Edition
$39.95
So did cost the standard edition $19.95 and the Special edition $39.95?
Or do those with the special edition pay only $19.95?, Or are we out of luck?
How did you not know? They literally offer both versions side by side with comparisons at the ns2 preorder site, the special edition is even more eye catching than the standard edition thanks to the use of orange.

Yeah, that's because even today it's only really the hardcore NS fans that are willing to pre-order at all on so little information. Hell, there are still those out there on the rest of the interwebs who suspect NS2 is vaporware. I think it's not really going to take off until it lands on Steam.
It's written:
-standard edition: beta, tools and the game.
-special edition: alpha, black armor, + beta, tools and the game
Why would you expect standard edition to have alpha?

Maybe because (just a guess) only about 100 people got the standard edition, and a million got the special. But it doesn't matter because NS2 alpha isn't coming out till next year. Or else it's going to be really limited (since we didn't see any marine weapon reveals or heavies or jetpacks... the aliens will just have to play with themselves).
Of course it's going to be really limited, otherwise it wouldn't be an alpha. Not sure why you assume that anything that hasn't been revealed isn't in yet though.
If I didn't miss an announcement stating otherwise, you are actually in a non-existant dilemma for the following reason: Access to the Alpha is given to all who pre-ordered the Special Edition at the same time.
What you're probably getting confused is the engine test they announced in the last update blog. The engine test will be given out by order of pre-order date to those who ordered the Special Edition. This will happen before the Alpha comes out. The engine test perhaps won't even be able to run your own maps, so you won't miss anything if you don't get it because you upgrade to Special Edition only now.
You will still get access to the Alpha at the same time as everyone else who pre-ordered the Special Edition if you upgrade now.
Bingo.
Makes even less sense that so many pre-ordered the special edition, that only in the order that you pre-ordered are you considered eligible for special stuff :P
