Server Admin For Newbies?

First, great game. I've played plenty of FPS and never liked one this much before. Since I have access to a stable server and connection I decided to look in to running an NS server.

Now I've never even run a HL server so I thought I would start here and see if anyone had any good resources for the stuff so basic everyone else already knows it?

Thanks! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

    First, What i would recommend you do is download the Full HLServer installation (Its about 100-110MB) Look on fileplanet (GASP!) for hlserver4110.exe. You can also try to look on google for it. You might get a better link that FP.
    Next download the NS Server, Links are on the main page. After you install HLServer and the NS Server files you want to grab the 1.03 update which is also on the main page, Then unzip the zip into the NS folder.
    After you got all that, open the ns/server.cfg file (ns would be where you installed HLServer and the NS server files too) Change the hostname and options you want in here. (Make sure you change the rcon_password)

    Go back to the main HLServer dir (where you would see the valve, tfc, ricochet, folders) Right click on "hlds.exe" and make a shortcut. Right click on the shortcut. And add -game ns +map ns_bast -maxplayers 16, You should probally have something like this:
    C:\HLServer\hlds.exe -game ns +map ns_bast -maxplayers 16
    Once you did that, You can simply double click the shortcut you have just made and the server should startup.
    Now if you want, You can install adminmod, and other plug-ins. But if your new i suggest to keep it simple until your ready for more.

    I tried to make this short and simple. Hopefully it will make sense to you.

    Good luck <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Take a look at <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=8&t=10309' target='_blank'>this thread</a> for Linux server information.

    Frankly, I always liked this HowTo guide... <a href='http://server.counter-strike.net/howto' target='_blank'>Counter-Server's HowTo Guide</a>

    Yes, it is aimed at Counter-Strike servers, but that doesn't mean it won't work for NS. It's definitely well polished with lots of good information and links. I've run a couple of servers both over a T1 and off of my own home cable connection. There is definitely a bit of tuning and experimentation that goes into running a reliable box. Linux makes a terrific platform if you want to milk your box for every ounce of performance. It's ability to be run without the overhead of running the Windows GUI and all of the superfluous services it includes makes it a nice choice for a server platform.

    Hope that link helps.
