Well I decided to work on a map of my own. So far I've worked on it about a weeks time. This is my second map ever for any game, and the first one I worked on was never finished. I'd like to think this time around it's going much better for me. I definitely find the Spark editor much easier to use than the Hammer editor. Below are some screenshots of my map and what I've done so far. I really don't have any layout for it. I'm just creating as I go, but I do a little planning in my mind of what I want and where I want things to be.

Map Name: ns2_invasion (working title)

I will add more screenshots or a video walkthrough as I make more progress on the map. Also, these are not totally completed areas. I still have some ideas of things I want to change/add to them, but feel free to give me any advice or ideas you may have. Thank you for your interest.

Ceiling looks a bit bland in the first screenshot, and how did you get that sky texture in your last post?
Otherwise, good work, I like it.

The first screenie, carry on with that room some more, get that roof lifted a lot higher and build a large columb that fits in the space created by the staircase so the stairs wrap round the columb then make an L shape platform out of the catwalks round one side of it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I admit it does look a bit bland. That room in the first screenshots is where I plan for the marines to start, so I don't know if that would change what Barlow suggests I do, but I'll definitely change it up some. I was going to stick the commander station on that platform with the ceiling going up some and add some windows towards to the top to let in some natural lighting from the outside. I will have to do something different though and maybe try out what Barlow suggested but also add in some windows for natural lighting across the whole room. I'm mostly working on the main layout of rooms and worrying about adding in the nicer details later. Spark is getting slower and slower the more I work on the map. I'm sure most of you have run into this as well.

The sky texture I have in a couple screenshots is pretty much the only sky texture there is. Just filter your textures by typing sky into the filter area. It's the last texture you'll see besides some industry type textures. I just added that sky in as a temporary solution so I could get a feel for how it will look. Once they add in the ability to use a skymap, then I'll be using that and getting rid of what is in there now.

Thanks again for your positive words and ideas. Keep them coming! I'll post some more screenshots of what I've done lately by then end of this coming weekend, and try to change up the marine spawn a little and see what everyone thinks of the changes.

Scratch the columb, stick the tech point up there like you said, that would look cool.

Well after a little over a week I have some more progress of my map to show. These pics are not representative of the final look. I still have a lot of detail to add in and need to make some of my hallways a bit bigger for the enourmous Onos to fit through. Why any refinery or factory would make huge hallways is beyond me, but ya gotta satisfy the aliens as well I guess.

I can't just not do something since I love working on the map so much. I appreciate any feedback and suggestions you all might have. Thanks for the interest in my map. I'll post a map layout within the next few days so everyone can get more of a feel for where things are located and all that good stuff.

Screenshots have gotten progressively better.
I didn't like the first ones too much, but i started liking it more as you posted more. Definitely need to work on the ceiling and making it more 'interesting.'

I would say make your corridors have a SLIGHT bit more contrast to them.
On the first post, the first three areas deserve to be brighter imo.

Going to comment on your lighting for your last post.

Great ideas. I can see your trail of thought through the different parts of the map.

I have only a few remarks about your "room" layouts.
I can see you like playing around with the props and you're good at matching them with textures. You have the lighting sorted out just fine, except for a few locations. Here it comes.

You need to think of the rooms as functional rooms. How would the employees/soldiers of the facility use the rooms.

Let's look at some examples (you really need to name or #tag your screenshots).
Starting from the top of the thread:
#1-3
Definitely change this room. It is too static. What's the idea behind the big open lighted and lowered floor part?
The lamps hanging from the ceiling needs to be changed. Use some fluorescent lighting embedded into the ceiling or floor-mounted lamps. The hanging lamps are used to provide light for tables or workspaces (think of schools and canteens).

#4
Fantastic hallway :D Love it! So small and cramped. Like the walking space in train wagons.
BUT again with the lamps. If you must use them then at least hang them parallel to the hallway. That way they provide more lighting and it basically makes more sense. Oh, and don't make it too long. Otherwise it will just be annoying.

#5
A lamp installed like that would get an electrician fired. Maybe you could hang it by 1 wire and let it flicker. That would be better.

#6
Brilliant! But again with the lamps. Parallel with the hallway! Please :)

#7-8
I can see you wanted the "light-behind-fans" look. This is nice - but who wants to work in front of 3 large fans?
Again you need to think how it would feel if you walked in to this room? Is it a locker room? Is it designed for storing tools? What are the screens below the fans for? Maybe the "broken-fan-with-toolbox" would work nicely here. That would explain the knocked-over working light besides the lockers.

#9-13
I like the lighting when you walk in there. Maybe it's inspired by the Half-Life 2 tech trailer? ;) Anyway, good looks, but awful use. Is it a museum? It looks like two exhibitions only the animals are missing.

#14
Great feel in this hallway - kinda like living quarters for staff. The lamps need a 90 degree turn though.

#19
Amazing hallway again. You've really captured the space station feel. Perfect. Wouldn't change a thing.

#22
The steel beams can't support the grid floor by themselves. It looks silly. You need some light steel construction atop the beams to support the floor. Some sort of skeletal construction welded to the large beams. Maybe a T construction like the one used in houses when the top floor/roof is erected.

That's what I have time for now.
You've got great ideas and really know how to work in Spark. You just need a little insight into structure building. Try Googling it: http://tinyurl.com/25rkbmt

The thing I love most about ns2_invasion is how you've utilised the rock props. It gives NS2 alot more of a 'natural' aspect (pardon the pun) and is alot better then walking down multiple corridors with nothing but metal either side of you, it all feels the same. But with this you can enjoy each room as a unique one. It's also nice to see outside.

And the tech point acsessible on a column sounds awesome.

Once again good job!

Hmm, some hallways look a tad to small for the Onos, making him only able to move in a straight line. On your mind or are these secondary corridors?

Love you lighting, it seems you've got your own style. and awesome style at that :P
