Game doesn't run at all

UPDATE: Fix is that you keep in in windowed mode. Full screen mode seems to be causing crashes for me.

Hello,

I just pre-ordered the special edition because I was a huge fan of NS1 and played it all the time. One of my favorite FPS' of all time.

Anyway, I just downloaded it on steam and tried to test out what content you offered so far, but my game is locking up like crazy. I tried reducing my settings and loading up different levels but I'm getting lock-ups in game and even at the title screen (specifically when the skulk (?) drops down and has a look at the marine). I have a relatively powerful machine and I don't really know why this is happening. I know it's alpha so there's bound to be issues - but I haven't so much as moved my crosshair 2 inches before locking up.

SPECS:

Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 4x2.4ghz processors
RAM: 2x2GB 800mhz OCZ gold ram (4GB total)
GPU: nVidia Geforce 260 GTX ~900MB
Windows XP pro edition

Anyone else?

pre-alpha, click the Feedback button on the right hand side of the forums and go report your problems there so the devs can easily find them :)

Report it to the Feedback area on GetSatisfaction.

Be specific, try to find out why or what specifically seems to be causing slowdown, and please don't make another thread simply because. Try at least 1 search for similar threads.

I checked all the way back through the Steam release for pertinent topics. Found none with my problem.

as this is the pre-alpha engine test, any and all bug threads pertaining to it are relevant to your problem. the bottom line is - this is a pre-alpha engine test - bound to be bug filled and not so full of lemony fresh victory.

Personally when I'm skimming through a topic about low FPS and guns appearing through walls, and someone comes in asking for help / reporting a crashing problem of an unrelated topic, I see those as hijacking the thread. I made this thread specifically because it was a topic that has not been made after the steam update, honestly is it that big of a deal that I made a new topic?

I submitted a feedback to this problem, I just wanted to create a place for people with this exact problem to talk about it, or to realize they aren't alone, or to compare specs to see if there's a common hardware issue.

Also you guys keep playing the "it's pre-alpha" card, well if you took the time to read the OP you'll see:

    a) I'm not upset that I can't play
    b) I explicitly stated that I understand it's a pre-alpha and there's bound to be major issues

The community is naturally hostile. The fanboys will jump on you at the slightest sign of criticism. Can you use the map editor? They are basically the same engine. Also, try not using full screen. It seems to cause problems for some people. http://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/t...reen_game_crash

Thank you. Actually that has completely solved my issue. I searched for similar problems but didn't find this little gem.

Also I can't figure out how to get to the map editor on steam. It says to right click NS2 and click "Run Launch Pad" but I don't have that option in my menu.

Yeah, you have to launch it manually from the Natural Selection folder in your Steam directory.

    SteamApps/Common/Natural Selection 2

Correction, the community is hostile to people who pop in, don't try, post random stuff that doesn't make sense/has been discussed before, and leave. Well, at least I am. Otherwise I try to help.

You're assuming a lot if you think I made no effort whatsoever before I made a new topic. I checked through at least 5 pages of the feedback section, and back through May 7th on this forum to see if there's any similar crashing topics, and read through any topic that had to do with bugs or performance issues and didn't see a single one with this exact problem. Some similar ones but the specifics differed once I read the whole post. I know, as a forum veteran (not this one), that a lot of topics pop up that are exact replicas of previous topics, and there's a tendency to be recurring topics of "omg help plz mi grafix r jus rly slow and HELP!!!!", but you should have been able to use clear judgement to notice that's not what this topic is.

Regardless, I found the fix I was looking for, so it's all good. I wasn't searching for "crashing" in the feedback area because I wasn't crashing, I was locking up and freezing.

I'm not being critical. I merely pointed you to where the actual fixes either are or where to post new ones since I had no clue how to fix your problem and thought it might be a new bug that needs to be documented.

    Glad you found your fix.

Can you edit your fix into the top post, or a link to it? It will help others searching for it.

Don't worry too much about the hostility. The community is going through some growing pains at the moment, naturally.
