Different Colored names

I was at my sister's house and her boyfriend was playing CoD. I couldn't help but notice that a couple of the players on his team had blue names, different than everyone else. I asked him about this and he said it was because they were in a party together.

I think it would be cool if NS2 had something similar to this. Like, on the Marine Team when you look at a player, their name is blue, but if they are on your friends list they show up green. And for Aliens they show up yellow, but if they are your friends, they would show up red.

Have at it.

BFBC2 your squad mates are Green to you and the game will Try and put you on the same team in the same squad autromaticaly.
It would be cool if NS2 did that as well. Works for the concept here:

    Intriguing....

So, this is only to keep track of your own friends? Hm. Not 100% sure I like it, but at the same time anything to keep people working in squads together!

I think it would really help with squads. Knowing you're right next to your best friend killing things is like the best thing ever.

Get like 5 friends in the same game all looking after each others back, and you got yourself a great squad right there.

You always get the best team work out of your friends and that makes a good game, so its nice to have the game help you team up with your buddies in any way possible.

Is it wrong that I don't like this idea because I have no Steam friends who would play NS2?
I've always hated achievements that required Steam Friends to accomplish, but I thats not really what this thread is about.

I love how Bad Company 2 does its Squad stuff. Its enough to get your attention and says "Hey, you're in the same squad as these guys. Maybe you should stick together." without being annoying If you're not in a Squad with someone, that particular player is Cyan, which at times doesn't work well but still gets the point across. A similar system would work extremely well however, I don't think you should be able to see your squad mates through walls and I definitely don't think that it should be related to your Steam Friends at all. NeoTokyo on the other hand has a similar Squad system, however, if you're not in a Squad with one of your team mates, its extremely hard to see if they're a friend or foe sometimes (Squad inidicator is larger and brighter) and I think thats something we should definitely avoid.

If you're in a Squad, it should be enough to know that you're in a Squad and who your squad mates are. You don't need HUD verification that one of your squad mates is indeed, on your friends list, and I don't think it adds anything as far as improving the Squads ability to get things done.

Yes :) You no reason not to like the idea and it would have no effect on your own experience in the game if it was implimented. You would be.. just a lonely Gorge.. :(
you right, this has nothing to do with Achivements in any shape or form.

Pretty sure Slayer was on about some way of ID'ing which one of the players on your own team where your friends in a room full of others without having to look directly at them with your crosshair for the name to popup and to go through looking at them one by one like that to know wich to follow in combat when they all move out..
It was annoying in NS1 when you teamed up with someone then the only way of finding that person was to walk upto each player every time you died or got split.
it would be destracting to have the names on show all the time too, but if you could hold a key down for a few secs to look where your team mates are then brill!

Of course you should not be able to see a friends name accross the map who is on the opposite team :) , He was on about the Scoreboard and Text Chat.
Text Chat benefits it because you have loads of players jibbering on so you tend to ignore it, but if text pops up in an unusual color you go, "Hey thats my mate talking possibly to me!?"

I was on about how BFBC2 tries to place you and your friends on your friends list into the same squad on the same team. Its handy as hell amd such a bonus, a lot of groups use TeamSpeak and Ventrilo, whenever they play online they all try to be on the same team anyway, its annoying when your are split up and can hear eachother tactics when fighting each other, Usually ALT+TAB is not your friend when you need to switch channel.

Of course it should be linked to steam friends, how else would this idea work at all. ? xFire? No point, not everyone uses it and why bother when everyone is forced to use Steam anyway.

    SgtBarlow has the right idea.

Positively intriguing... Something simple and straight forward would be ideal in this case.

I like the idea of making it noticable that Player X is a Steam Friend! I know I would want to stick with someone I know more then random guy Y as I don't know what to expect from him. I also would be more trusting of my friend to know what they are doing whereas I might be more leery of random guy and thus not be as focused on my own task and instead trying to keep an eye on his too.

I would also like to see things like if the commander assigns squads it does a similar thing. Like puts a (SQUAD 1) or something beside their name that is easily visible so I know who is part of my group to stick with.

Lots of meat here for possibilities in the similar vein.

The picked up idea is cool, but some of the latest rages in online FPSes are Quake color codes (^1 = red, ^2 = blue, etc) in nicknames.
To bad these games use your steamfriends name - so, if they join in an fps that doesnt support that, their names are redicolous.
^2D^3r ^1P^4i^1z^4z^1a is not gonna cut it for me. Pun... half intended.

Mind your own business. I've seen older threads beeing summoned from the graves around here while being a lot less appealing than this.

I'm not saying players should add codes in their name to get the colored names. The colored names would just be there based on who is on your friends list.

Ok, but you could still be in another squad. Last thing I remember was the squad system being added to ns 1, so the comm has the last word in who goes with who.

So: Strangers have white names, friends blue names, and squadmates a green outline on their names.

…or you could set it up like you want with a color bucket.
