New Ideas for an Interesting Suggestion
So, was reading up on the idea of light sticks or build-able lights for marines... kinda cool, and sounds like it could be useful.
I agree with making them dynamic ambient lights instead of point light sources (if they are thrown by marines) because they would be easier on the engine and just look better - think maybe like a super-bright glowstick that gives off an eerie green/blue or yellow/red light.
It was suggested to let Gorges do the same thing... however, given how the alien flashlight works, I disagree: instead, give gorges the ability to "build" something special- don't ask how it works, it just does :P
In essence, they can build a light "diffuser/absorber" for one res (each gorge can only have two out at a time though). In effect, this reduces the light in a radius to near-zero, with the effect fading out as it expands away.
I'm sure this is possible/plausible with the new engine, and would add an element of stealth back to the aliens side.
The other thing is, both these ideas would combat "gamma hackers" - imagine walking into a dark room with yer gamma all the way up, and then your buddy tosses a flare - combine maxed gamma with HDR Lighting (ala Lost Cost - the eye adjusting light dynamic seen in Mirrors Edge and other new games) and you'd be, literally, blind for a second or two. This is PERFECT or aliens.
Plus, the darkness would give either an ambush point or a distraction - marines know aliens could easily be hiding there, but are they actually hiding in the darkness, or cloaked just outside waiting for you to expend your clip "clearing" aliens that aren't there?
Obviously range values need to be determined, but I think this coul really work out.
Possibly, even make it where Commanders can build "light stations" - think an Obs type structure (small, low HP) that emits radiant light to brighten up an area. This would be in direct contrast to the Gorges light diffuser.
*shrugs* Just thought it sounded cool and useful, especially as these would allow for darker, more creepy maps :)

lmao xD
We have nanotech flashlights that never run out of juice, so, why?
and it would be an Omni light and not a directional! :D
And because pulling out 2ft long light stick, and slamming it against your rifle to activate, followed by a forceful throw followed by scanning what gets illuminated is so much more cooler then pressing the power button on a little crappy flashlight. It also qualifies as being "gritty" :P
