Extreme low resolution - unplayable

Hey there,

I just purchased the Special Edition in support of the team, really looking forward to this. I remember playing NS1 when it first came out oh so long ago.

So my problem is after downloading the NS2 Alpha start it up it loads into a window. I check the full screen mode and sadly left the resolution at 640x480. When the game went full screen it stayed at super low ress so now all I can see is the top / middle of the menu screen and only the tops of the option window boxes.

I've deleted local content and re-downloaded in hopes it might reset but settings were preserved sadly. So now I'm stuck and the game is unplayable. Alt-Tab doesn't work either.

Is there a file I can edit to manually change the resolution?

System Info:

Alienware m11x R2
Core i7
Geforce GT 335M

    First, you did not download the NS2 Alpha. The alpha is available on July 26th to Special Edition pre-order customers.

    Second, you have the "engine test". If it doesn't work on your computer and you can't find anyone experiencing the same problem, there's nothing that can be done. There is no official support for the engine test, as quite simply, it's not _meant_ to work. I wish you luck though.

    Look forward to the alpha release on July 26th.

    I think this needs some elaboration. It was meant simply to spot major compatibility issues with a wide range of hardware from the user base. It did just that and crashed and stuttered and artifacted all over the place for lots of people. There were limited updates to address some of these issues, but being a test...they discontinued support for it. I assume that from the test they have fixed the majority of strange issues and we will see this in the next installment (the alpha).

    in short: don't fret that the engine test doesn't work well on your PC...doesn't even run on mine.

    Thanks for the overly defensive post Foul Beast. :) At the very least you clarified what I downloaded, well done!

    Any ways, I posted on here exactly for that reason Dark Queen, to see if anyone else was having similar problems or if there was a quick fix. I understand what state the game is in. The game loads, that's not the problem, it's just the resolution is acting strange. Regardless, since I just dropped $39 to help support the teams' effort I assumed I wasn't over stepping any invisible boundaries in seeing if anyone in the community might be able to offer an immediate solution.

    And to fix your problem:

    Go to %appdata%\Natural Selection 2\
    Locate the file options.xml
    Open it in notepad
    Right at the top you can set the resolution, full screen mode and quality manually. Note that the x and y resolutions are swapped from what you're used to, I.E. y comes first. In my case 1440 x 900 looks like

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1--><y-resolution>900</y-resolution>
    <x-resolution>1440</x-resolution><!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    Set the resolution to what you need.
    Save your changes and start the engine test.

    :)

    NurEinMensch, you rock! This is exactly what I was hoping for! I'll give it a try at lunch and see if it works.

    Thanks again!

    I got this problem as well but I managed to change my resolution size in the Options menu and it sorted it out.

    Found the file and the changes worked, thanks again! It was set at 200x320 :/ Sadly though when I go to create a Firing range server the game crashes. Oh well, not concerned, I might try on my desktop for presumably better results.

    What does work on my laptop is the Level Editor! Woot! Which is what I was the most interested in at this stage. So far it's a very impressive piece of tech and will keep me busy until the Alpha drop on the 26th.
