Alpha Servers.

Thread discussion for the servers in the Alpha.
So, we have OVER 9000!!!!! people who have the Alpha and obviously going up, so...

I was wondering how many servers there will be and how many people these servers will contain (Maximum)

Also, making a few servers dedicated to the pre-order guys (Standard & Special Edition) so that only they can go on. To ensure they can play on the server with the guys here but only after this game comes out officially and not in the Alpha/Beta.

I've got an older machine that I'll be running a dedicated server on if I can. I would love a linux dedicated server but considering the circumstances I guess I'll have to put up with running windows until it gets done. Aiming for at least 12 players, hopefully more.

Hoping server rental companies (well, at least one!) will pick up the NS2 alpha for hosting. I'd gladly pay for a server.

Yeah, I won't be able to throw up my server until there's a linux binary. I'm not going to go buy another license of windows just run an alpha dedicated server.

I've got a pretty fast (quad-core, 8GB RAM) Windows 2008-Server that's got almost "nothing" to do (yet), but I've never set up a game server for a steam-based game.

Do I need to install Steam on the server?
Do I need a separate account or even buy a second (NS2-) license?

If I don't have to buy a second license I'll probably set up a dedicated server (located in germany) for you (and me :P).

I got a linux server at home, but I'll investigate if I can install windows virtually on it and help with hosting in any way I can :)

These are some good questions. I've been emailing server hosting companies to ask about NS2 Alpha support but have thus far received either no response or a "check back when it goes retail" response.

Anyone know of a hosting company that will be supporting NS2 Alpha? Price isn't a big issue.

I emailed Charlie about this:
1) Steam is not going to be required (they said some Steam dlls will be required, I'm guessing this will be similar to the ones distributed with hlds/srcds). Even if it were, that's not a big deal
2) The server is not going to require a separate key.

About hosting companies: One of the questions I emailed Charlie was in relation to this. It would seem the server is missing a critical feature for any company to be able to host it. Hopefully the developers add it before release.

That's unfortunate. I'm part of a large community eagerly counting down to release - unfortunately, the hardware is lacking and thus we'd have to rent a server or two. Hopefully that gets worked out in some sort of reasonable amount of time. Not to mention if it's just a bunch of average Joes doing the hosting, server stability is likely to be an issue.

You know there is this thing called rootserver?

I am planning on hosting at least 1 for both msleeper.com and F7Lans at time of release. I hope there will be some way of setting up reserved slots or a password, because I know me and my friends will always want first dibs!

And I know that they have already said that linux server files will come at a later date, but I do want to put my +1 for having them sooner rather than later. I am having to outsource a Windows machine to host a couple servers, when normally I would be able to set them up in a flash on linux.

I'm really interested in purchasing a server or two, hoping that's an available option! Really wanna get a core group of players together.

Could setup Virtualbox on your linux server if you got plenty of ram :)

why would you need natural selection support? all you do is install all the stuff manually on a dedicated server.

re Twitter update:

Do we have to apply to get the dedicated server files, or what?

I'll be hosting a dedicated Western Canadian server when the day comes. Should give good pings to west and central US. Got a box set aside already. I'll host any of the custom maps ready at that time too.

You can still host a server through a company like NFO with a VDS/VPS
• Apollonius999Apollonius999 Join Date: 2009-09-09 Member: 68725Members
I'll be hosting on my quad core box out of St. Louis. I might even expand out to my Texas and possibly other box's i have as dedi's across the states.

Never used a service like that for server hosting - how difficult would it be to set up a server? Seems like you wouldn't get the same functionality, but maybe I'm wrong.

$40 as the basic price per month seems a little on the pricey side, as well.
• Blue21Blue21 Join Date: 2009-06-29 Member: 67970Members
Considering that most servers from them are upwards of $50 or more its really quite reasonable.

If you know what your doing its really easy. Basically the same setup as you would if you were to run a server from home. Except, better hardware and internet connection going through NFO.

Also:

NFO servers are top notch. I've worked on four different development teams, and they've ALWAYS been willing to host our private testing servers free of cost. They have excellent servers with a very easy to use control panel, and at this point, I don't see myself using another provider. Seeing them backing up the NS2 Alpha is no surprise, they're always on board with great ideas.

I'll be tossing one up on the central west coast US, maybe two if demand calls for it.

Will the alpha have down loadable content enabled for custom maps via P2P or will it just run SS mods?
• yourbonesakinyourbonesakin Join Date: 2005-08-06 Member: 57682Members
There probably will be demand for a lot of servers.

There are 10,000 alpha players. If every server can hold 25 players on average, 400 servers would be required if everyone was bugtesting at once. That's not going to be the case (except RIGHT when it launches and hours afterwards (maybe a whole day in my case :D)), so 100-300 servers will be needed around the globe so mostly everyone can bugtest. I doubt even everyone who ordered Special Edition is going to bugtest the alpha, so maybe 50-200 servers will be needed for everyone.

BryNS will be purchasing a dedicated server to runa couple of servers.

Very glad its a windows executable, NS always did run better on a windows box.
