The Final Verdict

Just a new comer looking for direction.
I am fairly new to this game. I wasn't into Half Life at the time Natural Selection came out, and so I ended up never playing it. But I have always heard only good things about it from people who have. Then I was told Natural Selection 2 is being developed. I told myself that I missed the first one, but I wasn't going to miss the sequel. So I checked it out. It looked is great, the gameplay seemed original, and the graphics are on and above par with today's gaming world.

But at the time, the game was earlier in development, so my interests changed, and I forgot this game ever existed.

Then, on a different forum, the thread that originally introduced me to the game was bumped, and I was informed that the alpha was soon going to be released, and the $40 black armor/early access/extra support option will be debunked. So this leads me to my dilemma. By all means I want to support the dev team, their hard work, and most of all their roots in the community. But I have still never played the first game, which means I don't know how the core gameplay feels. Looking at a game and playing a game are two different things, and for me (a 16 year old teenager with no job), $40 is an investment.

So what I am asking of this community is simple, convince me (a person who hasn't played the original game, but is definitely interested in this one) that it is worth it for me to pre-purchase this game. If I could get some examples of what made the original game so great, and what (you think) is going to make this game just as good (or even better), I would like to hear it.

Edit: Odds are I am getting the game either way, it would just be nice to know more about what I am investing in

There are still are still a few servers online for NS1, but yeah the guys playing on the servers are probably the hardcore of NS1. Making it quite hard for a newbie to get into the game, which does have quite a learning curve.

NS2 will probably have less of a learning curve to make it fun if you're just starting out, but also enough substance to keep those NS1 hardcories happy (probably not, they whine a lot J/K)

Go and install NS1 and have a looksee at the game, but keep in mind that NS2 uses a spiffy new engine (Spark), making things that were impossible for ye olde goldSRC (HL1 engine) withing reach. NS2 will be a game that is NS1, but more then that...

If you have an hour to burn, this interview will probably help. http://bash.podbean.com/2010/07/17/bash-15...al-selection-2/

To be honest, I don't own Half Life. By the time I got into computer gaming, hl2 had been released a year earlier. The only reason I knew Half Life existed is because Half Life 2 had a 2 in it.

Nonetheless, perhaps I should youtube some gameplay footage.

I just don't know all the mechanics and features of the original game, which means I don't know how the game plays and what to do. I will probably be a n00b amongst hardcore gamers in the alpha of ns2!

In NS2 we are all going to be newbies again :P

Sure we oldschoolers have a some knowledge on what each class of alien does and what to build and some insight into the tactics involved. But it is going to be a new game with lot's of new stuff as well...

Threads like this are so pointless. We know nothing about you, your gaming preferences, or how much you value $20/$40. There's so much information out there on NS1 and NS2 that a simple google search could answer your question. If you're too lazy to look information up yourself I have little motivation to look it up for you.

You can get bots for both aliens and marines in NS1, so you can play the game by yourself if you want to, it's about as accurate as BF2 singleplayer is to BF2 multiplayer, you get the idea but it's obviously different.

If you aren't sure you don't need to buy the SE, I'm only buying it because I was quite fond of NS1 years ago and NS2 is bound to be a good investment even if I never play the basic game, it is going to be a solid mod platform so much like half life or oblivion, I don't buy it for the main game as much as I do the mods. Plus the tools will be fun to play with.

If you aren't sure I'd just go for the standard edition, it's still 20 bucks as far as I know which is a pretty small amount of money for a game, I'd be surprised indeed if you found it to be not worth the money.

I grew up playing games like starcraft, warcraft, command and conquer, goldeneye, halflife, and team fortress classic. NS1 merged all of my favorite parts of all of those games into one, and because of that, even though I haven't played it in years, I've still logged more hours playing that than any other game I've ever played. (edit: reason i haven't played is that i'm a sucker for vanilla NS, and can never find a decent enjoyable server to play on)

on top of thay, I've also been a bigger part of this community than any other game community, patially because I love the game so much, but also because it's just a generally awesome community.

If anything, I think it's worth it to get the special edition just to be part of all the great things that happen around here.

I tried out the majority of the Half Life 1 mods and found NS to be my favorite by far (followed by counterstrike which I basically quit due to the time I spent on NS- and the community was sub par). I would say ur best bet to understand the game would be to YouTube a few videos like you said. Assuming NS2 will have both combat (CO) and "regular" (NS) maps, try searching "natural selection commander" which will show you regular (NS) maps from the commanders view which IMO would be the easiest way to understand the tactics behind those maps. Search "natural selection combat" or somehing similar to understand the brutal, fast paced combat game play. You could go into further detail and search for game play by each specific class such as "natural selection fade" or "natural selection lerk". I hope this helps with your decision but regardless this is my favorite game of all time by far and I hope you can see why. All this talk has made me want to YouTube a few videos myself...

Exactly this. Really, the $40 version is for fans of NS who want to support the devs, and the $20 is for fans who don't want to spent $40. At this point the only conceivable reason to preorder the game without having even played the first Natural Selection is if you love team-based FPS games and you want to lock in the $20 price before it goes up.

Man my advice is get a friend who owns half-live one, get the NS1 install package and give it a try, if you like, Get the standard edition now for $20 and save yourself $20 to spend on another game or some other thing you might need.

Playing alpha from what you said will not be much of a enjoyment, but more like play testing. By getting standard edition now, you got a lower price and will still play the beta.

    Thats my point of view.

Natural Selection 1 is one of the greatest FPS titles I have ever played. When I bought the Special Edition back when pre-orders first opened up, it wasn't for the black armor, but to send them the money I felt I owed them from all the great times in NS1, and to support the development of NS2. The alpha, the beta, the tools, even the game itself? Extras.

(Note that I'm a constellation member as well!) I've sent UWE a total of $60 dollars for NS1 and NS2, and I can honestly say the only other deal that comes close to matching up is the Orange Box. I loved NS1, and I firmly believe UWE will bring me another great game with NS2.

I wouldn't be here if I did not.

A great and funny overview of all the different aspects of the game:

Here's a couple I made, showing off the game fairly well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3BV4puLXe4 (epic game that lasted 40 minutes back and forth)

Commander mode on the marine side:

40 minutes?! epic ns game?! Question mark, EXCLAMATION MARK?!

I remember some good four hour long games in Natural Selection that were more fun than the thousands of hours I've thrown into MMORPGs put together.

Thanks for the advice and videos. For those calling me too lazy to look up anything, think of my position:

I'm interested in a game, but didn't quite get enough to convince me to buy it from just the videos and screenshots. Where should I turn to get the best advice on why this game is going to be fun and why I should buy it? Naturally I turn to the community. If I hadn't gotten satisfactory answers from here, I would have turned to other sources.

Anyways, I'm definitely getting it, and I'm getting the $40 version (because, even though I didn't play the first game, I still want to support the dev team). I also know not to judge the game in it's alpha version. I may not have followed this game from the start, but I am a part of the modding community, and am very familiar with the modding process. I'm not one of those whiny kids that complains about bugs and imbalances when a mod is still in alpha or early beta.

i was going to say, "BUY IT OR I'LL PUNCH YOU."
but since you've decided to buy, that won't be necessary anymore :)

i think this game has something for everyone, and i think unless you don't enjoy sci-fi, that everyone finds something that they enjoy in the game.
