how do i get in a dedicated server

i see people playing on them how do you get in do i open a port or sumtin disable firewall what do i do.

    what I did though prob easier way

    #downloaded server.exe from main site
    #Downloaded NS2 onto my dedicated server
    #logged out
    #put server.exe in steamapps\common\natural selection 2
    #created seperate account
    #connected to steam opened port 27015
    #edited server.xml
    #Clicked and ran server.exe

    There is a large amount of people not able to get on servers currently (myself included)
    Ive taken to just starting a server (create game in menu, select lan so you dont bombard your internet with large outgoing bandwidth consumption) and playing with the stickied cheats in this forum.
    From what im hearing general gameplay is sketchy at best currently anyways :)

    I am following these instructions but I dont have a server.xml file.....

    You say you downloaded NS2 onto your dedi server, but did you also have to install it?

    sorry, just click the server.exe once and it should create a file
