Go easy with the damn patch sizes
Some of us are on connections that have bandwidth caps. I dont need to be downloading 2.5gb's of data between 2 patches. Please figure out a better way of patching rather than simply altering one texture in a wad and downloading the entire thing again at 200mb. I mean, never hear of segmented downloads, no? or creating a tool to merge code into your assets from preexisting ones?
You gotta go easy on my bandwidth.

Creation of the patches is all handled by the Steam tools, which creates incremental patches based on the previous version. This particular patch was bigger than might be expected because of tweaks to the rag doll setup for some of the characters that weren't included in the patch notes (the character files are currently quite large due to the animation data).
Most likely future patches will be much smaller though.
Hahahahahaha...good one.
Really?...Bandwidth Cap?....i haven't seen one of those in 10 years, They have something called unlimited out now. check your local cable company for details.

Loads of countries have bandwidth caps...
I'll just be personally satisfied w/ Max's responce and not bother visiting this thread again.
Actually for reasons I don't fully understand bandwidth prices are going up and caps are becoming more of the norm. If they can get away with it on cell networks, terrestrial is next.
Yep. There's many, many ISPs everywhere. Mine forces you to pay for the top package or they will charge us for every gigabyte over about 10 in a month. These jackasses seem to think the word revolves around them. If they can find a way to reduce the size of the updates, it's win win for everyone.
You're complaining to the wrong people... i think its your ISP that needs your complaints .

Go find me ONE Australian ISP that offers uncapped broadband at less then $150 a month
I dare you, I double dare you, punk.
Maps, animations, audio files, and a whole mess of other things will be updated over time as we step closer. While I can sympathize with the OP, the amount transferred isn't a surprise. It might be a decent move to post just how much data will be transferred (or is expected to be transferred) between each incremental patch so that those close to their limit can better discriminate whether or not they have the budget available.

How about this one? http://www.onebroadband.com.au/broadband-plans/
I live in Australia and while we are blessed with many things, unlimited plans are not one of these.
Unfortunately due to the high cost of bandwidth (due to only a small number of international links run by greedy companies) its almost impossible to find an unlimited plan available. Many advertised as unlimited are subject to fair use terms and/or they will 'cap' you after a certain download limit has been reached. So while your internet remains connected your speeds can be regularily down to 64k/128k or 256k depending on the plan and company.
TPG is probably the only reputable company with an unlimited plan, however not a single person I know has been able to sign up on this.
I'll simply download this patch overnight as they break out caps into peak and offpeak however large patches if consistent could be an issue for any Aussie alpha tester.
But I guess, this boils down to what has been said a million times before. This is an Alpha, not an Open beta, beta or pre-release demo.
There are large and significant changes to come and one needs to expect there to be big and regular patches and issues constantly. I still think many have expectations built from other games and/or betas they have been involved in. As the game more closely resembles the final version, less and less will changes occur to large and core parts of the game resulting in patches of this size. However at an early and critical stage its highly likely a large portion of the game is subject to change and that patches will form a large part of the content of the entire game.
Thanks to the UWE team for pushing out a patch so quickly and if this continues I think the support for this game will be first class.
In the end if I was you, I'd probably wait with updating and see the general forum attitude after a patch, if its unpalatable/has obvious flaws making it bad, probably wait for a new build, as most of the tim a lot of the same files are probably subject to change. It comes down to pros and cons i guess :/
Out of interest, what is a normal cap down there?
i dl about 500gb a month
I would actually do that for a stranger but after being called a "Punk" i am unlikely to even let the thought cross my mind again. I find it to be very disturbing that some even have the ability to type, let alone read when they sport a healthy attitude like that. So if you do have bandwidth limits i am sorry for that and maybe my responce was a bit course from my ignorance of the situation with overseas ISP's and i am sorry for that.
I'm sure UWE is keeping patch size in mind but like most i expect the patches to be any size as they are made to repair playability of a game not to feed you a few text files every now and then. I actually expect the first few patches to weigh in heavy on size as they will contain aditional content to complete the game as they build it.

I'm paying 69AUD for 60gb OnPeak (7am to midnight, monday to friday), and 90gb OffPeak (12.00am to 7am, monday to friday; and weekends). In addition, I also have a local peering limit (on WAIX) which is double that; so 120gb onpeak local, 180gb offpeak local. Although with my ISP, the bandwidth limits are fairly generous (for Perth, anyway - the Eastern States pay less for more), the service performance tends to drop during peak usage hours - something my ISP has yet to admit to, much less do something about.
Anyway I'm not entirely sure, but I think some Steam servers may operate on WAIX - so it would count towards my ample Peering limit, but I'll check my bandwidth usage once it's updated, to make sure.
I am from Australia, I am on a capped plan and I understand what you are complaining about but you have to also understand that the game is still heavy in development so when patches are released you can expect large update payloads as a lot of changes are made and I bet more then we see in the changelogs.
If you cannot cater for this then as mentioned it is best you do not allow it to auto update and monitor the progress or remove the game until the games core is not so heavily being worked on.
Its that or compromise and stop downloading other things.
I'd be more happy if the following patches were 5gb each :p

There's no need to brag about connections. I've recently moved from France to Canada, and I definitely miss my Internets.
The point is, if it were possible to get smaller patch sizes, it would be great for a large part of the world.
The other point is, it's not necessarily possible. It's also part of the whole alpha process, live with it. It's not as if they're making large patches just to spite us. They're not Apple.
I'd be more happy if the following patches were 5gb each :p

150% larger than the size of the game? Then we'd KNOW there was something wrong with their patching approach.
Wtf? Time to change ISPs, brother.

Ah, you mean like Time Warner's Proposed 5/40GB/month tiers that thankfully failed, or Comcast's 250GB/month up/down, exceed it twice in a year and we revoke your cable, internet, and phone packages for 6 months plan, or Rogers Cable's 60 GB/month and we shape you to 28k afterwards (and packet shape any kind of encryption, even on VPN).. or..
In the past decade most ISP's have had a "soft cap" that they never disclosed and based on local use conditions (IE, town full of grannies with thier email = 10 gb/month and you were "using a disproportionate amount" and got a nastygram or threatened service shutoff, living in Austin, TX = maybe a 500GB/month cap). Over the past 2-3 years they've been switching to "hard" caps where once you hit it, they shape or shut off service and charge you 1-2 dollars/GB overage fees.
no decent wireless plans where i am. its also not worth the time and hassle to get adsl installed for 2 months and then i go overseas for almost a year
