I'm impressed by just how much was changed in so little time. I just got done playing my second session of the alpha, it is completely playable now in my opinion (for what I expect of an alpha). I'm off to Get Satisfaction for giving some more feedback.
Oh, I should note I too was having authentication errors at first, but then I verified my files and was able to get into the first server I tried.

OK success, it was valve's fault.
I got to play through on a 10 person server (that ended up with 21 people, apparently the limits don't work), and there is a lot of progress! Network stuttering is a lot better, there are lots of little things now that seem to have changed too. Performance is identical, as expected, but it is certainly more playable. Interestingly, the player ping changes DRAMATICALLY when moving or doing anything. Stay still and you are green. Move, and you dip to orange or red (along with still quite a bit of latency/stutter). Apparently lan pings are 100ms or greater.
Performance wise, I had some people try out if there was a difference with or without shadows and the result was that people had about a 1fps difference . Thought that was interesting, it bodes well for future performance gains while maintaining the visuals.
It is very nice to see you guys being able to react so quickly to these releases, though the biggest drawback with the present system is the way that steam forces us to re-download the entire thing each time... (and you guys have to upload it as well). It seems clear that doing "quick" patches are not so quick, perhaps friday updates are the best way to do things.
Excellent start to the alpha period, I look forward to the continued updates.
Nice but for the commander I would sugest that everyone in commander "chair" is bumped with some damage but not killed because with the sytem you've choosen I'm a marine a onos want to kill me I go in comm chair and he get instant killed .....
[edit] For limits on dedicated you have to set them in .xml file shortcut thing doesn't work at all
hi guys just wanted to say good job on the first patch, just tried it and now I can see that people are getting kills and allso saw some really noticable improvment. keep up the good work.

Very good job, It's quite amazing that you've fixed a lot of the bigger issues. All that's left for a stable game is the apparent "lag" and hit registration and it's almost there!
uhm i mean, amazing Timelines, if they keep up this speed.... my, they must have some life-regenerating thingy in the studio or something xD perhaps many many bottles of Ether.

What do you mean "freezes"? Does the computer actually lock itself up? Because there is quite a long period where the screen is black and nothing is happening, but the game is actually loading.

Go into your console, by pressing `, and then type r_stats. It'll show your fps.
And i'm glad to be involved with this again, i've always loved seeing changelogs from previous versions of NS and now with NS2, brings back fond memories. :)
this unfortunately has not fixed anything for me i still cant join servers after waiting on authenticating it ends going reason unknown and then all servers still disappear. im really dying to try out this game

Yeah the servers disappearing after a failed connection is a problem I see too.

Impressive first patch guys, both on the turn-around time and the number of issues fixed!
