sufficient rig?

Just need some input on whether or not this rig will be sufficient for NS2 whenever the beta is released. I'm on a tight budget so i can't really upgrade any of these parts. Anyways:

-MSI 870 mobo
-AMD x2 regor 250 3.0ghz
-Corsair 2x1gb ddr3 1333 ram
-Gigabyte Radeon 4850 (might go Crossfire at Xmas)
-Rosewill stallion 500w psu

Thanks in advance for the input.

I fear that no one will be able to answer your question right now. The final engine/performance/hardware requirement stuff will stay hidden in the "fog of alpha" for quite some time to come.

I was affraid of that. I need a new computer for school anyways so I guess I just have to hope it's sufficient. I would imagine 2 4850s in Crossfire and a ram upgrade around Xmas will surely be enough.

What you have should be fine - it's a good middle-ground performance, I'd suspect u'd be able to run it at medium quality fine, maybe even high depending on how well optimisation goes.

You could always pop in more RAM. It's the cheapest upgrade that you can do as 4GB is becoming the norm these days. Still, I'd consider a PII X4 265 (I think that's the black edition) later down the track if you can afford it. Everything else should be fine barring some weird configation bug ala TF2.

(based on other modern games these days)

You'll do great. The HD 4850 is a solid card and that CPU is a fine match for it for gaming performance. The amount of RAM is fine as well, as long as you're using it wisely. (it depends on your background applications and OS)

I never recommend SLI or Crossfire, especially for someone on a budget.

Thanks for all the input everyone I'll be ordering the parts very soon it sounds like. PsuedoKnight would u mind explaining why you don't recommend Crossfire or SLI? I'm just curious. I figured I would build this rig with the option of adding another 4850 as an Xmas present. More ram will definitely be added later. Again, thanks for the input.

if you have a tight budget, don't touch your system until the beta is released.

because than, maybe your system is okay enough, but on the other hand,
you get much more better hardware for the same money!!!

I would wait but I need a computer for school anyways. I'm tired of going on campus to the college of IT every night to do my homework. I'll just get back into NS1 until the beta is released.

put 2 more gigs of ram in that thing before adding another vid card. an additional vid card might need a PSU upgrade; more ram is very light on power usage.

Thanks Wheeee I'll probably go that route. Do you think 500w will be enough for Crossfire if I don't have many other add ons? Right now I'm planning on 3 80mm fans, an 80g HD, 1 DVD burner, and possibly a wireless Ethernet pci card.

you might be able to squeeze it in, but i wouldn't risk it. rosewill isn't a great PSU manufacturer, i'd bump up to ~600w to be safe. after all, i believe ATi recommends a 450w psu for a single 4850. if you upgrade your PSU, i'd look into a seasonic. They're more expensive, but a whole lot more reliable.

Thanks for the info I'll definitely look into it

Just to add some info, as I get fairly decent performance in this buggy alpha on high with this:

    E6420 2.4Ghz PIV
    2Gb 1066Mhz DDR
    Ati HD4850 512Mb

And keep in mind that if you are on Windows XP 32bits you can't really allocate more then around 3Gb of ram... And when you are going to upgrade the ram, make sure they are double twins. And a pretty decent brand as well, default crap is crap!

Thanks for the info that will be a similar setup. Glad to hear you get decent performance with it. Luckilyi will have windows 7 (for free!) so it shouldn't be a problem when I add more ram. I'm going with 2x1g Crucial DDR3 10600 to start. It has some decent reviews on newegg.

To be honest, you only spend more on better RAM if you intend to overclock. I wouldn't bother spending a heap on RAM with high clocks and minimal timing as the performance increase isn't that much. I would go 2x2GB of DDR3 RAM. Mine is G.Skill Trident DDR3-1600 with 8-8-8-24 timings. Not the best, but it only set me back ~$140AU.

Upgrading your CPU won't give you a whole lot of benefit in games but depending on the school work you're doing, it could be a nice boost for any simulation work etc. Your RAM and CPU are the weakest points but I don't think your CPU is slow to the point where it would bottleneck your video card (which is fine). I wouldn't bother going Crossfire as it's the most expensive path.

Thanks it sounds like my Xmas present will be more ram instead of another vid card. The ram I chose is the cheapest 2x1g ram ($48 I believe) but it has some decent reviews and Crucial is a good name. Plus I don't intend on overclocking much (I'll probably just use the 10% OC switch on the mobo). 2 gigs will have to suffice for now but I'll bump it up to 4 gigs around Xmas. As far as my CPU handling my school work, I'm sure it will as I mostly just use microsoft office and a few other non-intensive programs. Thanks for all the info
