<div class="IPBDescription">Yes I pre-ordered</div>I've haven't gotten a new CD key, and when the game is launched, nothing about updating to the new patch is displayed and when trying to join a game it gives a client server mismatch.

If you have the standard edition, you will not be able to play until the game goes into beta. If you ordered the special edition, the alpha will automatically stay up to date. Which version did you order?

Did you pre-order the standard $19.99 edition, or the $39.99 Special Edition?

That would be the Special Edition, but you should know how much you paid though <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/smile.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Anyway, to check this update setting go to your Steam library (list of games) and rightclick NS2 and select properties. Now check the updates tab to see if "Automatic Updates" is set to "Always keep this game up to date".
So apparently it updated... However all that is seen is text against a black background... I can figure out how to hit the "join" server button, and did - and joined a server. Did try to make some noise to find out in fact the graphics engine just wasn't loading... GTX 470.
Also I was able to move around and see percentages of marine structures when spawned.

The game is still in Alpha, and has many bugs. Stay tuned to future releases to see if your problem is fixed, as they're a number of video problems present this early in development. Click the FEEDBACK button on the right side of your screen here in the forums, and post a bug report with as much info as you can, so they have a record of the problem.

Exactly - I don't want playing games to be easy. I come from the days of typing in a IP addy in your console to connect - gamespy was fantastic when it first came out. Steam makes everything so non-personal.

Sure I can - that's how I changed my movement keys ;) , but there is no bind for the flashlight that I've seen.

Yeah correct, there are a few binds missing off the controls page. I never got around to reporting.

You can still do that if for some odd reason you want to, just don't ever click the server browser and instead add any server you want to use to your favourites by IP.
Although I don't know why you'd want to as you'd be unable to find the IP without using the browser.
Steam was garbage when it first went mainstream but it's grown up and matured well by now, I used to be one of the die hard Steam haters but now I love it.

What step am I missing?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Try this, right click on the game in the library and then choose verify game cache. I've used it in the past to fix texture files and the such which isn't exactly the same, but give it a go.
Comments
I've never touched any of its settings, nor do I want to. :)
edit - yes, I pre-ordered the game the day it was available.

NS2 Black Armor: xxxxx registered to xxxxx
You tell me :S
I'm not being a smart-a - just trying to figure out how/if I can contribute to the game (by playing).
Anyway, to check this update setting go to your Steam library (list of games) and rightclick NS2 and select properties. Now check the updates tab to see if "Automatic Updates" is set to "Always keep this game up to date".
That should do it...

Thanks guys for all the help! Apparently patience pays? I'm not sure how steam works, but, I now remember why I refused to use it all these years :/
Now if only the game would let me rebind my keys from the standard wasd, to esdf (my preference since I like my hand to rest on a home key.)
The f key is bound to flashlight, so every time I strafe right, the flashlight comes on and off. Off to get satisfaction! :P
Why, can't you get into the options menu?
