<div class="IPBDescription">1.04?</div> Was just curious about when 1.04 or the next patch is coming out. Supposed to have all the needs for an official clan match I thought? 1.1 is shaping up very nicely! We've worked out a new solution to the siege cannon complaints that involves a 2-stage attack instead of marines having only one option to attack alien installations.
The siege cannon still fires through walls but doesnt do the usual splash damage. It targets 3 buildings at time and does constant, albeit slower, damage to them. The damage will kill faster than 3 defence towers can heal, so more than one siege cannon will be required to remove larger walls of lame. With chamber restrictions the way they are you'll never need more than 3 sieges to remove a wall of lame (we're working on that balance now, might be increased to 4).
The second option for marines is a new "assault" cannon, simiar to the siege, that does <i>not</i> shoot through walls, but does have unlimited range, will auto-target buildings and fire old-style siege shots, splash damage included, but the any building damaged by the new cannon is disabled for 5 seconds (cannon fires every 5 seconds). The drawback to the assault cannon is that one marine must "operate" it for it to fire. The cannon auto-targets and fires only while a marine stands next to it holding the "use" key down.
We're happy with the results of these changes so far and we're looking forward to the 1.1 release!
Also, the 1.03 announcement on the main page closes with the comment, "The NS Team is now taking some well-deserved time off and may not be around to accept other mirrors." Well-deserved indeed... so don't expect 1.04 to come out quite as quickly as the previous patches.
In all seriousness though, I'm having a blast with 1.03. If they never touched the game again, I'd still be a very happy camper to have such a fine FREE game.

I was under the impression that the Dev Team in no way wanted a "manable" gun in NS. Where did this come from?

Hey man, thats not cool. I was just trying to keep the debate open on the siege cannon issue. I'd hate for the NS team to not look for alternatives simply because they think the siege is the <i>only</i> way marines can compete.
As for everyone else ragging on the "using the assault cannon" idea: #1 its not quite "mannable" in that it aims and fires on its own. #2 You'd <i>hardly</i> have to be on the cannon for the "whole game". Once marines get a well defended siege going outside a hive, it doesn't take very long to destory EVERYTHING.

Actually it was, it's a long-running fad from before the mod was released. No need to get uppity.
(Yes that's right. I consider sieges a bug, not a valid gameplay feature.)
