I've also had this thought, and I'm sure many other people have. Back when the engine test was released, I made a mental checklist of all the assets we knew of that were "in" or "in-process", and- more importantly- what we knew for a fact was not completed yet.
...I realized that Fall 2009 was more ambitious than anyone could have imagined.
(That being said, development cycles can be unpredictable and certainly take much, much more time than anticipated. Just ask the team behind DNF :P )

I think Fall 09 was just a very very optimistic estimate before they realized how hard it was actually going to be to finish the engine. It was a mistake to name a date based on speculation when they'd never done anything like that before.
