Found this interesting video whilst having a discussion with some mates on another forum. Whilst it is about MMOs, the principles are apt for all other genres as well.

It is an interesting watch (if you can be bothered) and maybe will open some eyes into the business side of game design, and that Indie Developers such as UWE deserve a lot of respect for what they are doing.

i remember there was some community speculation that the BUS (anyone still remember?) was gonna be an MMO addition to ns, making it the first MMOFPS/RTS, now THERES a niche market surely no one has claimed yet

Planet Side tried, but failed. It was a great game though. Before anyone claims otherwise it did have RTS elements.

It was marketed as a real game changer from what I can remember, but did not end up playing for long. Had no clue to what was going on when I joined a server. Just kept assaulting some 10m high walled base and being killed randomly.

This might have been some horrid beta though, so who knows.

Huxley the Dystopia tries that as well, as you can have 500 people fighting per large battle (249 people per side plus one commander) over forward bases that influence equipment cost, i think.
I can't really tell as the closed US beta was during US evenings (which comes down to late at night for europe, where i am) and most guys where way ahead of me [so I was mostly questing alone or trying to fight in seperated deathmatches with horrible lag].
Anyway, now its back at the korean developer/publisher/something?, and I don't know when they even plan to open it again.

Yeah yeah I know. It's some kind of MMOFPSRPGRTSomething...

Check out the developer video on the bottom. This game actually looks like it's going to be a real success. It's a MMOFPS with the option of going into 3rd person over the shoulder gears of war like view. It's looking incredibly innovative....well pretty much everything that video just said it looks like this game will do it. Best of all...it WILL be free to play.

I've been learning that, contrary to what I expected, most of the time "free-to-play" is a bad thing. There's so many models out there and few of them work to satisfaction. Take the LotR MMO for example. It's free, sure, but you have to buy quest packs past around level 20. Ugh. Some gamers may think that's great (most of the asian mmos thrive on the f2p model) but it doesn't sit well with me. (or most people in North America, it seems) League of Legends f2p model is pretty good, though, at least when I played it last.

I feel like I'm off topic, but actually I think the whole thread is in the wrong forum.

BTW, the video was pretty mediocre. The style was cliche with very little personal touch. The stuff they talked about offered very little in new information, strong predictions, or incites. It was mostly an aimless blog post in video form. If you feel like I'm being overly harsh, take into consideration that my criticisms are mostly based on how much it reminds me of the crappy stuff I've written. heh.

While it does remind of Global Agenda a bit, I do like the concept of the game and I did rather enjoy the demo, I'll prob follow it and try and get in the beta to see how it is. The main problem I had with Global Agenda was the instancing and if they are able to get rid of them i'm on board.

Pseudo, yeah I do agree, I always preferred the 15 bucks a month then a f2p model, Hell I even stopped playing TF2 because of it. With the Mann co. update they should have just renamed it World of Global Fortress. But that's another story.

But yeah thanks for the share Opie the game looking interesting, and I'm always willing to support an indie developer.

I like to play when I want to without feeling like I'm being restricted by monthly allotments. :)
