Be the MAC

Just out of interest. This obviously won't happen, (devs have enough on their plate) but how many people would play as a mac given the option?

Flying around building stuff and welding rines would be kinda fun I think.

it would be cool if the commander could take 1st person control of a drone and ###### around

I'm an apple fanboy, I use Macs at home, work, I have multiple Macbooks as well as Apple TV, an iPhone etc etc..

But Macs are bad for games, I would definitely continue to use my PC

No, then i'd much rather just get a welder directly from the armory to replace my pistol or something.

    It sure used to be.
I wonder how the symmetrical composition of NS2 will play compared to NS1.

I could see taking first person control of a mac being similar to 'logging in' to a UAV terminal in a game like Bad Company 2. The player logs into a terminal where his first person body 'lives' (and can be killed) while he remotely controls the MAC or MASC in first person. This might allow more refined placement/movement in hairy situations without the commander needing to babysit the drone.

And would also take away far too many marines from the field.
Because first you have up to 3 people in the comm (mirrored by aliens, so not completely relevant), but then add a player in a masc and say 2 more each controlling a mac.
Thats 5 people just sitting in the base.

I like the idea but wouldn't that give conflicts with the commander?
Or would it be an idea to give the commander a MAC remote feature?

Yeah, come to think of it the command chair is basically the aforementioned remote terminal. Maybe allowing a commander to have remote control of a MAC or MASC might be really useful in some circumtances (first person welds of armor and buildings would be the most important role I think), but it also might be a lot of work to create what is essentially a first person commander interface if you allow building placement as well as welding/repairing. Would a welder weapon be more useful overall?

And rename "Commander" to "Mr. House" and "MAC" to "Securitron V2"

I was about to ###### about how I feel like such a dork for saying that...and then I realized, "Hey bud, you're on forums for a videogame...and it's 5:30am." There are worse tendencies to hide, perhaps...

Edit: I suck at being on topic, sorry.

OT: I think players would much rather have the option to use welders as marines (like to weld doors) than control MACs from the comm's perspective. A comm limiting his view by only being able to see from one MACs perspective is never a good idea, and a marine taking control of a MAC takes a marine off of the field of battle and doing something that the commander can manage by himself.

That's because NS1 diehards are obsessed with being able to do the most boring ######e possible like constructing buildings. The fact of the matter is, its easy to imagine a situation where the commander would need to order a drone to do a task under fire, and it would only be possible with FPS control so he'd be able to dodge incoming attacks while welding or whatever.

It would be cool also if you could walk up to a mac and take command of it... like it could follow you and you could tell it where to weld stuff (maybe also tell it what to build using your personal res) :P

It's still better to get a marine to do that, they will after all be in the area if there's a firefight going on and they are a lot more durable than a MAC.

Maybe in future the devs will give the marine side a robot they can control (or AI?). Like the MACs big brother or something, it could provide assistance like giant floodlights and mines. Would be so cool :D

You mean commanding drones to build things or weld things, as in exactly what we're talking about?

If I tell a bot to weld something I click twice and then go do something else.

If I have to stare at the thing I'm building while it gets built, then it's wasting time.

As commander I have to do lots of things, I don't really have the time to manually control a weld bot.

Of course you could say that would be an ideal job for a second commander, but why would you have a system where a guy gets into a command chair to go back into first person in order to build or weld something under fire, he could just go and do that as a marine.

Although really the whole idea of building 'under fire' is kind of silly, as marine you are fighting aliens who are fast and powerful, but they don't use ranged weapons much, so they can't realy just deicde to take potshots at the mac, they would risk being shot quite badly if they went after one and if they did, no amount of dodging would protect it.

As aliens, your builders transform into the building and it just grows, so you don't have to protect the builder.

If you need the precision of a first person control, use a marine, if you want mass 'fire and forget' style building, use a weld bot.
