Game Graphic Choppy - Beta? or my GPU?

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to see whether you guys are experiencing the same problem as me:

I have a 3.4ghz 4gig ram and a Radeon Saphire 5770 graphics card, I run SC2 on Ultra no problem...I would think it can handle the graphics of NS2...however when I dl the game yesterday, I found the graphic to be pretty choppy, just the game play itself is not smooth.

I messed around with the quality setting from High to Low (running on 1920x1080) didn't seem to make a difference. My ping averaged about 70, I'm not sure whether it's the beta stage of the game that is making it choppy or is it my computer. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? The reason I'm concerned is because, when SC2 beta came out, the game was still running smoothly although there was bunch of bugs that needed to be patched. Maybe it's the server lag in combination of the game?

Is the game running smoothly for you guys? (graphic wise)

Thanks :)

    Beta.
That 5770 is decent, but not quite beefy enough to handle an un-optimized game like NS2.
    Give it time. :)

I can run at 1920x1200 on High and keep around 30fps with my 4870.

My FPS is fine until I get close to another player. Then it gets so choppy that I can't aim. Only thing I can do is go Lerk and spam gas, or be commander.

what frame rate are you getting?

Sounds more like lag than fps?

lnb boy i have almsot the exact same set-up, instead i have the 6core 3.2ghz 1090t and the 5770, It's not the graphics card, It's the network play stilll has bugs.

Open up ns2, hit create, make a lan game (make sure it is lan not network) play by yourself offline and you will see that your framerate is fine and not choppy.

I'm also running a 5770 and I get at most 30 FPS. Depends on the map. Tram is worse than rockdown for example.

The lagginess of gameplay is proportional to the quantity of hydra/sentry spam.

i think we have the same rig. phenom II black deneb edition processor?

its most certainly not your card, besides, our gfx card rules, if you want to blow it out of the water, go get another 5770 and crossfire bridge them.

I have the same vid card, but I noticed in the past fps would drop like mad when you get to a room full of hydra spam (like tons of it). Damn hydra spam would crash the server too

1920x1080 = 40 fps at best on my 2x GTX 480's in SLI.

    Beta, not your card.

In my oppinion the low framerate is the most important annoyance in the game at the moment.

Without a framerate that is high enough, it makes it tedious to play the game, which makes for less testing time and less fun.

With a framerate of 15-30 (And dropping fast, when you start to see action) it's nearly impossible to shoot at your enemy, which should be the main feature of the game.

It's my understanding that the choppyness has nothing to do with your system setup and everything to do with server synchronization? From casual observation it appears that NS2 is relying to much on the server to do hitreg, etc instead of just letting the client do most, if not all of the work and then 'vote'/update with the server at less frequent intervals. This is why other network games are buttery smooth, everything is happening on the client. The client 'predicts' a lot of what's happening and updates with the server at intervals.

This is why, you may have noticed, in other network games, including NS1 that you'll continue to lose health in lerk spray, take damage from fire, get hit by OC's, etc.. even though you've lost your connection until the 30second (or whatever the default) timeout is.

True, but this isn't a game yet :P

Many people have found that their lag/choppiness scales more with CPU power than GPU. So, an "old" GPU is less important than a "new" CPU. That said, it is only the last couple releases that the devs have targeted performance.
