But I would gues that it never loaded the valve pak files or ns pak files. Nor does it even show that the map was loaded properly. So although servers running, its not actually running NS. But lacking a better paste of the server info your not going to get any better answer.
So turn logging on, look at the log, and if you can't see any errors, try use "-debug" in the start line. Then look at log file. Or paste it here.
D:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hlds.exe -game ns +map ns_bast
And this is what my ded ns server starts like on windows. And why I doubt you loaded any pak files. or the map. keep in mind this isn't the ded server package, but the actual game install. So some things like version etc will be different.
But the main differances to note are;
-all dir path seperators in windows are \ not /.
-It loaded the valve pak0.pak language file.
You are exec, hlds.exe from within the proper dir aren't you? And you did install the windows ns server version I assume? Because the only reason I can think of that it would try to use the linux path seperator is if its reading a linux dir path?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well the server is part of a home lan setup, but the internet connection does not plug into the server box.
The adsl line is run into my brothers pc and, with connection sharing on, then through a switch to the server.
The server box is running win2k and for some reason team fortress works fine over the net?
Below is diagram of the setup:
Just noticed in the 1.03 brief ,in the news section, that the win32 and linux updates are in the same file.
This could be my problem as i just extracted the files to the Ns dedicted server folder. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also which files are the linux files and how do start server the server logging? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
*.so is a linux specific file (Shared Object)
besides that I'm pretty sure all the other files are interchangable
One of you must know something <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Do you have an external router? if so, what ports are you forwarding?
I also am not noticing that i don't see any paks opening up and loading. i get about 2 screen fulls of it.
-game ns -port 27015 -noipx +log on +maxplayers 20 +map ns_bast
also i have a similar setup and had to set router forwarding for port 27015 to the correct ip address inside of my firewall. Check the router config if you can to make sure that it is recieveing incoming messages correctly.

sounds to me like your port forwarding isn't setup....what is your configuration?
Better yet, don't...just rename it so you'll still have it.
I even installed the whole show on my brothers computer, which has the adsl line, and still nothing. Not a sniff! The only thing that works is Tfc, smooth as silk, not a stuter. So what gives?
Aslo just wondering, if i install Halflife from the cd and then patch it to 4.1.1.0 will the dedicated ns server files work with this?
Ps Thanks to everyone who posted a suggestion! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
