You can upgrade it to "Running leap" which allows you to use it while running. Dunno about the hives but the upgrade is pretty much useless since you can leap without it if you jump and land leap (counts as standing still). In air leaping doesnt work at all which is very confusing as well.
yeah sounds bit buggy to me. I rather see the old ns1 leap back than current one we having now. maybe with hive upgrade it should change? with each hive upgrade it would take you further and faster - might be good idea.

from a physics perspective mid-air leap never made any sense, i don't think it should be in NS2

You need to create a whip, make a second hive and then upgrade it to hive mass. At this time you can upgrade running leap in the whip, which will let each player able to upgrade running leap for themself in the evolve menu.
Unupgraded the leap is a weak leap, usefull for dodging, but kind of useless. Unless you stand still, as then it is a normal leap (but you dont stand still very often while attacking rine base do you?). Upgraded the full leap will work when moving aswell (reason its called 'running leap').
Leaping midair would make no sense at all :S. The microscopic thrusters does tho, which I guess is the reason why you can fly if you walk onto a wall then <i>spam </i>jump while walking in air (dont work from the floor). You can leap while flying though, which I guess is for gameplay issues, as leaping midair aint realistic.

There is currently an exploit, just hit jump and leap at the same time. You'll be laughing!

Never mind, I had a bug where mutliple tier 3 hives would disable it...
