The next will most likely be the first client update (1.1) which should fix some of the linux bugs, and hopefully utilization. Hopefully tagged with matchplay improvements, and HLTV support. However, nothing has truly been said, but you can always hope.
I believe he is talking about a patch that both clients and servers would need to download (like most any major patch). So it could change things for both sides. Adding new things for the client like HLTV, and things for the server (hopefully linux improvements).

Because of the high CPU usage, Jolt.co.uk (for example) only rents NS on dedicated machines, and that cost a minimum of 215€ a month (about the same in $). How many clans can afford this?
For $215/month someone could just get a 768/768 DSL connection and toss a machine up on it. Well, you can rent a full blown box for about half that price. Right now, I rent one for around 130 a month and I have run 5 game servers (2tfc, 1 cs, 1 dod, 1 ns) on it pretty comfortably as well as a website. The only 20 player game server is one of the tfc, with the rest being 14 (I like smaller servers).

It pings right between 60 - 90 for me depending on the workload. Not "Holy Carp, this ping is god" ping or anything, but pretty darn above average all-in-all.
I'm not going to plug anything unless I'm asked about it, but there are ways to go about renting a cheap place to run a ns server or any other type for that matter.

My connection to the next hop up is 2-3ms average. The difference between me having my machine here and in their data center isn't worth mentioning. As for uploads speeds operative word is most. The same exists here. However I purposely set out to find an ISP that had symetric speeds and flat out asked them when I signed up over the phone, "I run my own mail server, FTP server, web server and game servers. Does your policy prevent this." I got an equally candid answer, "As long as it is nothing illegal we don't care what you do with the bandwidth. If it is illegal we will shut you down." It is possible with a little searching for a lot of people. Most people just don't want to put forth the effort.

yeah right now the Linux server is total crap. The thing is as big a resource **obscenity** if not bigger then Global Operations. At the moment with adminmod and metamod it runs at about 2- 2.5x that of CS. At the moment its not realistic really to offer NS servers if you run on Linux until the team brings the resource load down to atleast DoD type levels which is about 1.3x that of CS.
Its a know fact that the linux NS is a pig. But at least give them a chance to get it optimized. Personally, although I'm not happy with the lunix optimization levels, I think they are doing a great job. It is still beta1 after all. And they where quick to get the first 2 patches out. Quicker then I've seen most other mods/game developers get patches out. And tobe realistic, for beta1 you gota be impressed. Its fairly stable, its quite playable, even though it still needs alot of work and tweaks in the balance department.
I'm sure with all the posts and comments about the linux server. They are well aware of the scope of the problem and will be fixxing it in the next patch. But I'm sure thats just one thing on they're plate. There main focus at this level of development is the game itself. And honestly, linux optimization is an easy fix.
The only ppl who seem tobe truly annoyed about it, are all these "rent servers from me!" ppl and theyre shameless advertisement posts. I'm not happy with the linux levels. But I'm willing to give them a chance to fix it. As the game is at least playable and supported on linux servers. I will save my true gripes and bitching till after the next patch. If nothings done to address teh problem. But until then, give the dev team there due. As they are, and have been, doing a great job.

As for Linux utilization problems, Flay has been working on one ever since NS was released, one solution was to "cache" the entities, this so far has definately gotten load down but at a great consequence of buildings disappearing, etc. He was been working with VALVe to possibly try getting this to work. The other surefire way is to update his linux SDK to work witht he latest glibc's and compile properly with GCC. Once he does that, itll be one hell of a load drop due to the newer glibc's that alreayd have CPu optimizations and other OS features. Currently as I hear it, his SDK is outdated and the status of him updating it is unconfirmed.
As for balance changes, I do not know of any that are planned and if I did, I definately wouldnt list them. Last thing he needs is a flame-war about new changes (which he already recieves flak for) so I guess ill leave it at that.
That is my list, whats changed recently I do not know anymore. No, nano isint a beta server anymore so even if I had the list I wouldnt give a list of next patch details anyway. Flays greatest priority always has been CPU utilization, so i guess just hang in there linux admins, hes still working on something.

Hey, I ain't complaining. Even though my machine is ancient and can barely parse a dog fart I run NS on Linux. Ain't no way I'd switch that machine to anything else. Might finally try to max out the MB in terms of CPU and RAM but that's it. It runs, that's the important part.

I for one think Flarya is doing one hellava job.. (and those that help him of course).. the bugs are going away (not all but some really big ones).. the performance is getting better (even on linux, although not much from 1.01) but I know he's doing his best and he hasn't given up.. I run a linux based server and foot the bill and deal with the problems (not just NS problems but problems with addons), and even though its a lot more work and time having to admin a NS box say over a CS or DOD .. I still wouldn't give it up for anything.. so keep up the good work NS team.. and if you decided to sell this game.. I will gladly fork over 40-50 bucks for all the work you've put into this fabulous game.. even if I can still download if for free.

Is the motion Tracking Bug Linux only? Is there any validity to this claim? I know that our server is running Linux and currently is experiencing the bug.

HLTV does work, but its incomplete right now.
I'm extremely happy with v1.03 thus far. It has made being an admin MUCH easier than with v1.02.
The bug fixes were simply a godsend.
