If your reading this you should have already opened the topic.
Okay lets see... automatic rifles... shotguns... flame thrower.... grenade launchers... ability to teleport matter into areas (the buildings)... have little small robots to help us build and repair (MACS)... we have a weapon that completely decimates organic matter (ARC) ... yes we have highly advanced armors and weapon upgrades... wait waht the hell is this flashlight? lol? which year do we live in? i thought this was a sci-fi futuristic space game against aliens.

Now when this is open watch it up untill 45 seconds, then from 45-54 you see a man with some kind of electronic device visor AND A PAIR OF NIGHT VISION GOGGLES ON TOP OF THIS HEAD (hes badass so hes not using em)

Okay i believe people now get my point here? its in there, in the trailer so why not in the game?

My proposition:

Okay obviously flash light is awesome and makes the game a crazy good experience, also the lighting for the flashlights is amazing and no other i have seen.

BUT how is this:

i have a idea that makes 100% sense, its realistic and it works:

There is going to be a upgrade in the game, its called this for now, not the offical name but you guys can decide what to call it later:

Advanced Display Systems

This can be bought when you spawn for about lets say... 8 plasma?

Now this only works when turned on, so after you buy em you can turn them on with a pressed key that toggles them on and off.

This will give you: a minor night vision that AUTOMATICLLY turns on when you approach dark areas of the map to light them up lightly with a short range, you can use flashlight still and see things from a far but this will assit you clearly in close combat areas. AND you will get your motion tracking (from ns1) here, you will get blips on your screen like in ns1 and they will show up on your screen. OR we can have a alternate button to turn the night vision on and off, of course the motion tracking will be permanent, who doesnt want to know where the enemy is.

This needs to be reasearched, this requires a observatory open up to be researched, then this technology is retrieved from an armory.

Now you may do the folllowing:

Comment... as usual... OR:

Say how freaking awesome this idea is and how it makes sense because in the video about ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw9STE1m2ug ) and at that video 45-53 seconds some 1 had them on their head, THIS SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED.

That would remove one of the aliens main advantages... Hiding in the dark. So I dont really like it. Gameplay over realism here xD
If they made nightvision it should be ultra sensitive to light (Kinda reversing the hiding spots... So aliens should stay in the light if they see a marine with nightvision) and take a sec or two to power up/down with complete black screen. Otherwise I think it would destroy the gameplay.
    But thats just me ;D

how about this, we throw the entire night vision idea in the trash bag but we keep the motion tracking thing that can be bought from the armory and researched with an observatory which costs plasma when you spawn and buy it from the armory alive?

How about we keep that... like in ns1's motion tracking.

besides in the video at 45-53 seconds it makes it look stupid that he has goggles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw9STE1m2ug

You do realise not everyone has the special edition outfit right?
You'd have to create a new model, texture and effect for the game.

    Plus as stated above,
it would ruin the aliens ability to hide,
    which they need,
    because they aren't carrying guns.

    Motion tracking?

    No. Just no.

Night vision? Not just for special edition orders. Otherwise, eh. Whatever. It's a gimmick. I'm neutral on the subject.

Motion tracking+sent of fear was a huge aspect of ns1.

if you think about it, its completely different if you played with it. That is all.

No motiontracking, it should only be available to entire team via research if it ever becomes implemented.

No automatic on/off, anything that takes away control is annoying as hell.

Yes if the actual night vision narrows fov and only works to a medium-close distance. This way you sacrifice your wide perception for specific parts in the dark near you. Lerks can still hide far away and snipe you etc. Think of the grainy counter-strike googles.

if anything needs to come back its alien flashlight, an ability which gave all aliens to see in the dark. It was an amazing ability, and that needs to return.

motion tracking was overpowering in ns1, and we really do have to agree with this guys. As marines I loved it but as alien it pretty much ruined it all, and aliens had very little ways to countering it, wasn't too happy.

Yes, it was a "huge aspect" of NS1. I only play with scent of fear if my alien team SC rushes.

And it's overpowered. It takes away loop-around counter attacking from the game and in general exactly mimics wall hacking. It's hugeness is exactly why is should not be in NS2. NS1 was a mod, and overpowered gimmicky cool stuff could be put in because nothing mattered. NS2 is a game, so "Hey, it looks cool" is insufficient.

Note the poster, using text that takes up half the screen is extremely off putting and makes it appear that you have no idea about rhetoric. That being said, I don't like this upgrade. Aliens still need to be able to be sneaky and do ambush attacks, especially in their own territory. This completely negates that.

Only motion tracking I would be ok with is one that is limited to a range around the observer, and each observer you build you will have to upgrade to a "advanced observatory" before it can track. This way the only place marines will have the advantage is in their home space like it should be.

Night vision could be ok if it was its own upgrade and the cost, for the commander and the marines buying it, was balanced with it's overall effectiveness. It would seem off that marines wouldn't use some sort of night vision at some point.

I think it could quite possibly be an upgrade for the flashlight... I think it would be worth trying. If it works, it works... if it upsets the game too much, maybe not.

Night vision is actually a relatively interesting mechanic, generally you lose some aspects of vision and gain others. For example if it's too dark to see you can gain visibility of your surroundings, but you lose overall contrast compared to actually illuminating it with a flashlight, you can also vary peripheral vision by giving the player a quite wide flashlight compared to a restrictive night vision, or vice versa.

I'm sure you could make it balanced.

A user of this would be permanently blinded for the duration of the round when Drifters flare :P

good so i understand that what i stated above is crap and you guys want someting more *developed* so its balanced.

okay no problem as i stated you can shape it in any way you want.

I can't (won't) read text if it's too large. Use a standard, reasonable font size.

whats wrong with the flashlight? unless you're doing ultra stealthy ninja stuff in the dark, night vision is pointless.

also post like a normal person. if you have to highlight something, make it bold. im pretty sure most people just ignore your suggestions and just look at the title of the thread

motion tracking should definitely be added back in. it makes absolutely no sense that its not in. its a valid and usable upgrade. i mean while youre at it why not take out the obv as it negates the effects of cloaking.

motion tracking really was overpowered, aliens has no way to counter this. sensory chamber really was poor attempt to counter motion tracking, and it hardly did much. Other reasons for motion tracking problems, its another form of wall hacking, you can see exact locations of everyone, this is huge problem.

    edit

the obs can be used to ping locations of the map, and protect the base to uncover hidden aliens.
And it can be built in other places to do the same.

the alien team has sent of fear how cheat is that?

the marines can detect movement so not only does this make it very GOOD FOR THEM but it also makes them DEPENDABLE:

if they went around a corner they wouldnt expect anything because they didnt see any blips: but a bunch of skulks and a onos were cloaked so they all got raped and ravaged.

see my point? that was a awesome factor of ns1, it was so cool and the suspense about it was great, it also makes the marines think twice when entering a room if something really is there.

motion tracking: only when you move

sent of fear: 24/7 all the time

if MT doesnt get implemented they why should sent of fear now.
  • lunsluns Join Date: 2010-12-05 Member: 75502Members
trust me sensory does not counter motion tracking at all. Its great for focus if you happen to have good fades, that's about it.

I like how you said MT, only when you move. :P

Starcraft 2 actually added motion tracking as Terran feature. =) While I agree that the old Motion Tracking was not fun to be up against, I think there are changes we can make to reintroduce it back in NS2.

I have two proposals for Motion Tracking: Either
    1. Implement MT as a temporary ability activated by the commander, so it cannot be on all the time, or
    2. MT covers only 1.5 rooms radius around the Observatory, and warns aliens that are detected by it as well. (like in SC2).
