Motion Tracking

<div class="IPBDescription">or lack there of?</div> I play on 4-5 various public servers, and I have never seen motion tracking actually work.

The only exception being every once in a while it will make a blue blip for a hive.

I remember the first or 2nd game I ever played, having 20 or more blue "blips" showing up.

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't it be making a blue "blip" for every alien which is moving in range?

Does the commander have to do a "scan" in the area for the motion tracking to pick up targets?

I am starting to believe it's a server-side thing? On some pubs it NEVER works, but on others it seems to work. *shrug* maybe I'm just really unlucky

I must be non-observant. The motion tracking works everytime for me. Strange...

It works most of the time for me, but sometimes it won't.

Thats odd. It works for me.

I think it is a server setting though. If you click view game info, i THINK it has a motion tracking 1 or 0 there.
    1 being on
    0 being off

But, i havent checked for a while so mabey it was a hallucination.

Please post an IP where it works, I would like to see it.

I'v literally played 100s of matches accross these 4-5 servers without it working.

Can those of you who've had it work... explain the details?

-Do you need a satalite at remote locations?
-Does it make blips for any moving alien and any range?
-Do you need to do sensor sweeps for it to find targets?

I believe that motion tracking is what the marines need to not get smoked on 9/10 matches.

It works half of the time for me. The other half, all I see is a blip for each hive. And sometimes, when you start a new game, I'll see motion tracking even though we haven't researched it! Weird.

I have heard there is a bug in the linux build of the server. Linux servers either can't use it or it is turned off.

ok, here is the deal that some of my friends and I have figured out:
    first descrip of the observitory:
    1) any aliens in its range (it will cover marine spawn and not much else) can not cloak
    2) if motion tracking is researched then any MOVING aliens in the ENTIRE map will show up with blue circles

    now what CAUSES THE BUG!!!

    This was discovered by the Oberlin CompSci department {OCCS}

it is server side it is the LINUX server that seems to break it

we had a dedicated server running and when ever we played motion tracking never worked
we then tried hosting a game on the windows side of the machines and it started working (compleatly reliably)

the only specs for these comps that I know is that they are running some what old (and sorta shody) Radieons

yah, we don't know if this is b/c of our vid cards or is the actual problem, but yah it is from the linux server (hey Flay I think we got it ;D)

so a simpl test is to try and play only on windows servers and see if it works <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I would still like a reliable IP where motion tracking always works, so that I can confidently peg this as a server side issue.

    Please post.

Also, I would like to know exactly what it does when it's working.... so that I know that it isn't just me that is the problem.

Heh, for me personally I'm kinda enjoying the lack of motion tracking...Maybe its just me, but when I have played with motion tracking, I find the big blue circles that sometimes fill up the screen are rather distracting when you're in the middle of a firefight, gets in the way of my line of sight with the aliens.

Same thing for me with aliens, those huge yellow dots showing up on the screen sometimes make it difficult for me to accurately shoot someone with an acid rocket or spikes.

Maybe I'm just rambling, anyone else feel the same way???

if you want a server where motion tracking works, look for a non-Linux server.

yeah, its a rip off. 45rps to see where the bloody hives are. Not like we dont know already.

Laz is right, motion tracking is bugged with linux servers, thats why you're not seeing it every so often. It works fine with win32.

    Try here:
    207.44.168.73:27015
Im pretty sure it works here. Oh and for those who are wondering what its like when it works: It looks kind of like the aliens ability to see each other through walls and such.

It's some sort of optimizaton setting being used for the Linux compile messing it up most likely. C++ is known to be incredibly picky about optimization flags on Linux for some gawdawful reason unless you use the newest compilers, which has it's own kettle of restrictions!

i hate the motion tracking. the radius of it is bigger than the whole freakin map so you only need one observatory and it can be in your main base. it makes the game boring knowing where all the enemies are all the time.

It's called a tactical advantage, Vipr. That's why the smart Skulks tag marines and bases with parasite. Only, unlike the parasites, motion tracking only tags moving Kharaa, which is the blessing of not filling up your screen with bubbles, and the curse of not catching anything laying in ambush.

Motion tracking NEVER works for me either but I always play on the same servers,... perhaps they are linux servers donno... must check
  • littlewildlittlewild Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9467Members
You can easily tell whether the server you play on is a Linux server or a Win32 server by looking at the icon next to the server name. If it is a Window icon, it is a Win32 (duh) server. If it is not, then it is a Linux server.
