I used to play NS1 back in the day (2003?) and loved it. I sucked at it but loved the idea. It was brilliantly implemented and I have yet to come across another FPS-type game that has two such differing teams. Each team is such a different experience, and the RTS idea keeps the marine side fresh, rather than everyone just wanting to be Kharaa.
But I digress, this is all common knowledge. What I want to know (And yes, I used the search function):
Tutorial? Strat guides/threads? List of gameplay (not graphic/physics) differences between the first and second version?
I want to be a competent commander, for example, but my team would hate me. I'm not a great RTS-er in regular games, like C&C, and to learn the mechanics of this game, various rule of thumb "chess moves", etc etc would take me way too long. A sandbox would be awesome, or an offline mode with specially programmed bots or similar.
I'm speaking core tactics, not specific strategies. A game like this desperately needs one and as of right now, it's a bit off-putting to newbs. I want to pre-order it and I know once I "get it" I'll love it, the teamwork and all that. But I need to "get it", those underlying tactics that players know. Is there a writeup somewhere? Hell, I'll read one for NS1 if it still applies to this game. I don't want to spend 35 bucks on the beta, play it a bit, get frustrated and never touch it again. I want to be informed, to enjoy an engrossing experience, rejoicing on working well with my teammates and raging at the other side when they get the upper hand as a group. You know, like all mature-ish gamers do :)
Also, if you're swallowed by an Onos, do you still get that disgusting inner gutshot of being digested? That was awesome!
Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction!

time for waiting :)
but as stated, it is too early for proper strats as balance is still be majorly tweaked.
Also, I find a lot of current comm strats involve exploits, such as placing crags in walls or hiding MACs under extractors/command stations.
Learn the basics, keep an eye on NS2HD and you should be fine until release is coming close ;)
Muchos appreciated for taking the effort with my below-basic questions!
