Max working on 4 hours sleep again?

RebelRebel Join Date: 2003-04-10 Member: 15371Members, NS2 Playtester, NS2 Map Tester, Subnautica Playtester
Things are being accepted to the tracker only about 4/5 hours after work stopped last night.
I know there are guys working around the world but I thought final acceptance to the build stream was signed off by Max.

If that's true then the guy is pulling major hours again, lets hope he doesn't make himself ill. :/

Some say that he can go for 5 days without sleep, and that he hasn't used a keyboard since he was 3.

but even grown men can go overboard.
all i can say is, Max and rest of UWE, don't kill yourselves to please the community.
do what you gotta do to release your game, but don't get too affected by impatient people who can't wait for progress.

If you're worried about the 4 hours, what would you say if you knew they worked through last weekend..

I'm pretty sure accepted means it's been tested by playtesters.

    I'm not anyone's mother but...

It'd be good to follow a strict work schedule. Maybe you guys don't do it that way and like to keep things like that flexible -- that's cool -- I'd work there, lol. I much prefer coming in early and going all-out for 8 hours...then go home. I seem to get more done that way and have time for life-stuff. Milling about during the day is the worst thing I can do.

    <a href="http://xkcd.com/303/" target="_blank">http://xkcd.com/303/</a>

Staying up late and working is never a good thing in my experience. I know you guys don't want to disappoint and feel responsible for getting work done when you say you will...but we all know easier to make mistakes when you're tired. I've written and done a lot of things that made no sense because of that :P.

As a funny aside: sleep deprivation is not good. Sometime last year I pulled an all-nighter (playing games of course...used to do it all the time...but now...) and then the next evening I went to a furniture store with my girlfriend. Man, they aren't kidding when they say sleep deprivation can make a person seem drunk. That's what it felt like, and according to her, that's what it looked like. Good thing they had all those beds and couches for me to lay on at the store -- yeah...we left and she wasn't pleased. I didn't care of course (like a drunk).

Don't worry. Yesterday was an unusually long day, but I was home by 10 PM. Sgt. Barlow has cooked up a neat system where the Mantis bug tracker talks to Pivotal Tracker, so what you're seeing is probably the play testers confirming fixes in Mantis. In my old(er) age I much prefer to get in early than stay late.

Crunch mode is common in game programming, in fact at some places (E*cough*A) it's pretty much S.O.P. to the extent that programmers burn out and turn their back on the whole industry.
Stating concern is not the same as patronising, if I was telling him how to regulate his sleep pattens and what times of day he should / shouldn't be working THEN I would be patronising him. (and a hypocrite as I am work some very odd hours myself)

I was just going by this post by him: <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?act=findpost&pid=1832189" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...amp;pid=1832189</a>
in which he says he signs off the tracker.
The work could have been competed some time ago but then has to be tested *THEN* signed off, makes sense that he rather then the tester has the final say to it being committed.

Edit - IIRC he commented that something along the lines of being on his 4th illness on the xmas pre beta crunch they pulled.
I want to see the game done as fast as the next guy but not if they are going to kill themselves in the process.

2nd edit - Max has posted now anyhow, seems the testers can sign off the changes then. ;)

As long as we are talking about sleep, CNN:
"people who drive after being awake for 17 to 19 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level of .05 percent"

'Bear in mind that this is a guy whose idea of the ultimate game involved a "neural network hive mind" that wanted to learn how to laugh, so it taught Hitler how to tame T-Rexes and offered him alien technology which doesn't hide the fact that the name of every weapon came from Star Trek. And no, I'm not joking.'
    ^ + minimal changes = ns? :D

Hivemind needs to learn how to laugh, only the aliens themselves can right now :(

Would be cool to hear a faint chuckle come from the hives when a command station is destroyed.

Or a sigh if a Command Station is recycled while being attacked.

Actually it's a relatively common problem in the games industry.

Most of my lecturers at uni have stories of having to make people go home because they didn't leave the office for several days or something.

Game developers are often kind of insane I think, really good, but also really crazy given the amount they work to meet deadlines and things.
