[Editor bug] Black background

After patch 164
After Patching my NS2, I noticed that my editor background color has changed to black and it can't be changed.(?)
Because edges are also black and background in editor is black, this is likely a bug.

You can change the line colour in editor options. We all have this at the moment after the editor got fixed from a different bug Max hasnt had time to fix this yet.

I posted on get satisfaction about this as well as a few other issues. Feel free to add to it here---> http://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/t..._need_attention

It's not really that big a deal. As Dux said you can change your line colours. Most editors have a black background so it's really not a problem.

    Tools > Settings > Interface
Major Grid Lines - Dark Grey
Minor Grid Lines - Light Grey

    Just do it.

Black is the new grey. I like it.

Agreed. It's definately not a show stopper, but it would be nice if background colour could be changed in editor settings.
However, I don't know what [3D modeling] editors you have used, but most of the ones I have used, have a grey background by default. :)
(edit: build actually had a black background!)

    @edit3:

Hammer has a customizable background, mine was always magenta to make it easier to spot leaks as well :)

The problem is that prop meshes are still black so you need to zoom out with a high grid density setting to see them in the 2d views.

Yes, its annoying. Especially because I mostly use 2d views to get things done.

By the way.. which colours do you use in editor due to this black background? I only changed my edges to Olive. :P

Not only are the model thumbnails exceptionally hard to view the texture thumbnails now are entirely blacked out.

There any way to solve this or shall i wait for the fix?

Same problem with the black thumbnails here too.
I tried reinstalling and everything, nothing helped.

that's really weird guys, i saw this on getsatisfaction and i'm not having those texture problems.

however, my working custom skybox materials (as of 163) are now completely black in 165, QQ.

i rarely use 2d views anymore, all perspective with snapping, 2d top and side only when i need to make sure things are the same height.

i've been keeping the black background and all settings standard. all of my geometry is already in place before 165 hit so i don't really mind the black on black. it actually makes selecting edges a little more vibrant.

Setting a different background in the editor is about as simple as calling device.clear(USER_SET_COLOR) or however the syntax is for them at the start of the rendering pass but 1 line regardless. I'm sure they just haven't gotten around to making it an option yet and preferred black for now.

The editor currently has a bug where it builds new texture thumbnails as black (if you've had NS2 for a while you likely won't see this so much). I'm not sure when it'll be fixed.

In the meantime someone with full set could upload their thumbnail cache for those that don't? It can be found in %appdata%/Roaming/Natural Selection 2/Editor/cache. I'd do it myself but I don't want to inadvertently send out non-public art assets.

As a temporary fix here's the cache directory as of ns2 build 165: cache.zip

As Insane pointed out contents of cache-directory should be copied to %appdata%\Natural Selection 2\Editor\cache directory (edit: fixed to correct location of cache dir). Some of the newest thumbnails don't work but no can do about that.

    Hope this helps.

%appdata% already gets you to "Roaming", so it's %appdata\Natural Selection 2\Editor\cache

Im not used to editing the config files. Which one do i need to look at? I really want to get the background back to what it was before.

It isn't an option yet. He was referring to the actual engine code that is compiled into DLLs. Setting the background color of the renderer is usually a one liner, so making it a customizable thing in the future won't be very much trouble. Or at least, it shouldn't be.

I can't find my appdata folder on win7 ultimate 64-bit. I tried typing it in the search on the start menu(which worked perfectly well on vista) but nothing. Help? Thanks!

EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out. Thanks google. I should learn how to search before asking :P
