I agree that the muzzle flash is totally wrong in this game, and many games for that matter. No one that has actually fired a real weapon on full auto would ever say that they're OK. As Tryon said, real weapons are designed to channel the already small muzzle flash AWAY from the sights. I have some first hand experience on this. I was with the USMC for 8 years, and have fired every infantry weapon in the Corps inventory. I can guarantee you, I NEVER lost sight picture due to muzzle flash during daylight (nothing you can do at night, but walk the tracers or break out an NPVS.) Even crew-served MGs like the M249 SAW, the M60E or the M240G have a relatively small muzzle flash. Assault rifles have almost none. Where does the majority of people get a mental image of a weapon firing? The movies! And since you can't kill people making movies, you have to load those wepons with blank rounds. And guess what? Since blank cartridges do not have a projectile to push out of the barrel, but still require enough gas pressure to blow back the bolt, you end up with that Hollywood foot-long sheet of flame coming out of the barrel. As far as gameplay goes, I don't think it matters. It's anoying for sure, but harmless. If the target can be obscured by the muzzle flash, it's far and you shouldn't be going full auto on it. If it's close enough to hose down, you'll be able to see it flash or not.
<!--QuoteBegin--Bolter+Dec 14 2002, 11:28 AM--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Bolter @ Dec 14 2002, 11:28 AM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I agree that the muzzle flash is totally wrong in this game, and many games for that matter.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Realism should ALWAYS take a back seat to gameplay, and in this case it obviously does. Or better still, how about magic bullets that do not hurt your friends, or respawning. Let's get some REALISM in this mod. No one respawns, and one misplaced grenade takes out the whole marine team.
What I don't get is why the HMG, which fires stronger bullets, has the same size muzzleflash as the LMG, which uses smaller bullets. In fact, the HMG's flash appears SMALLER, because the barrels are farther out. It just doesn't make much sense.
Folks, it's sometimes a good idea to read the whole post before going off half-cocked. As you can clearly read in my last paragraph:

Alright, in my humble opinion, the muzzle flash DOES need to be slightly modified for us poor souls running the game in 640x800 mode. The flash LITERALLY covers my crosshair and the entire bottom right corner of the screen and is made impossible to aim. The only solution I have to this is r_drawviewmodel 0 in the console, and that is only useful for the first couple of minutes before motion tracking is up. Once MT is up, I have to put my model back on so I can get the advantage of knowing where aliens are. I hate having to turn off my weapon models jsut to be able to aim the LMG. the HMG has the same problem...
I think that if you have your resolution set nice and low you should get a smaller muzzle flash to compensate <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Add an experimental technology called "Muzzle Supression" which you can research to remove muzzle flash (slowly). Or add it to weapon upgrades (4th level upgrades have no muzzle flash, 1st level (unresearched) have full)
Add a sensory upgrade called "Transparent Limbs" which makes your limbs 90% transparent to you.
Either that or just change the animations so they aren't as dramatic. The skulks effectiveness is seriously affected by the fact that he can only see clearly during about 1/2 of the battle and all marines are affected by the fact that the right half of their screen is blocked while firing their gun.
ok, I finally saw what you guys talked about.. I ended up getting killed because I was looking at the barrel of my gun instead of my target, but I get what you're talking about. Apparantly I kill skulks with my pistol, and save the LMG for the fades. Huh.

THE PLAYERS make or break the mod. You do what the public demands, and from reading every submision, its apparent to me i'm not the only one that the muzzle flash is unacceptable. Never in any game has there been such a flash that obsures your view, and there are FREAKING TELEPORTERS in this game.
Right, so by your arguing if enough of the players of the mod both argue for instant 'press a button and win the round buttons' for when the match very first starts then they should include it? Now maybe that's a little extreme, but you're building up the fact that you think it's the players who should now have complete control of the finished product and not the developers who slaved away on it. If the players don't like it, they'll leave. If everyone hates it? They'll all leave. And the dev team learns something. If they make another game they won't make one like this. However allowing the WHINNY BITCHY PLAYERS to decide how the game balance works is probably, in my humble opinion, probably the dumbest idea ever.
Right, I can tell you're a game designer and have thought this through already. Please don't submit anymore posts until you think it through. Thank you.
It's used to balance the weapons. Teeth and Flash are there so you don't completely OWN as a starting soldier/alien.
Think of it as motivation for you to do your job as a soldier/alien so you can get out of your starting position.
