3d infestation?

Just curious, is the current infestation texture a placeholder and will it eventually (hopefully) be the 3d infestation showed in the video?

Yep! Currently it uses a decal system, but eventually *should* look better than the original mockup video.

Cool! That should really add to the (already awesome) feel of the alien race :D

Shot take from NS2HD's trip to their office. Proposed shape probably...

Absolutely a placeholder. While I was in the office, I asked Max if UWE still intended to make DI 3D, and his reply was a strong affirmative.

The DI is just a place holder so the devs can experiment with the gameplay effects of having infestation be a requirement for building and health regeneration.

DI was the reason I got the preorder. I am so happy now ;)

wish they'd make the prototype go on the walls too, so we could build hydra's on the walls. hopefully that will happen soon.

You can. The DI placed by the commander extends infinitely in the vertical direction--the effects of it anyway. So to keep the chain of DI alive, the patches don't have to actually physically touch each other, but rather only overlap in radius in the vertical axis.

The side effect for gorges means that the gorge just has to put down a small patch of infestation on the wall, place the hyrda, and it will stay there even when the gorge DI disappears, as long as there is hive DI in the vertical plane somewhere. Same thing goes for rafters in the ceiling above the DI. While you can't put a hyrda there without a DI patch, it will stay there as long as it's in the vertical plane of active DI.

    Hope that clears things up.

Dynamic infestation, for me, is the most exciting feature of NS2 (when it was just an idea in their podcasts). It was worrying when it wasn't certain if it was being added or not, but so glad it's staying!
