Playable?

<div class="IPBDescription">Looking for something to do</div>Longtime NS player from waaay back when. I have a few questions, is the beta really "playable" or is it still very buggy/choppy/empty?

Is it easy to get a game going or are there only a few other people on, I am stuck between game releases at the moment, and I wanted to pick this up when it was done but I thought "Heck ill just try the beta". But ultimately I am looking for a game to play right now and don't feel like tromping through another nightmare... years of mmo testing that have run me ragged..

I guess that comes down to each individual. Personally it is still a bit buggy but I enjoy playing it a lot. I have a good pc (i7, 6g of ram, 1g vidmem) and it runs pretty good for me even if its not perfect I still have fun. There is always a least a game to play even if there isn't a lot of players. I like the fact that there is a little player base and I come across the same people from game to game, I hope for UWE it won't always be like that though.

If you want to get a feature complete game for now it probably won't satisfy you. If you want to take chances and invest in NS2 for its future then go for it. I am quite confident NS2 is growing to be a great game. For now its pretty much just a preview (one 'real' map, no tier3...)

I built my pc around xmas.. I have 2gb 6950, i7950, and 8gb ddr3 1066. I think (hope) it will run fine, that is true.. it is an investment. I might pull the trigger on it soon. It is all downloaded and played through steam correct?

You'll have decent fps, but it will still lag/crash for you. Performance is limited server-side right now, meaning that your hardware will have little effect on how 'laggy' the game feels. Still, on the right servers with less than 10 people, you can have some fun games.

It's playable but it's still rough. You might as well wait a little longer if you really don't want to deal with any headaches.

If you deem playability by hit registration, you'll want to play on LAN.

Actually bandwidth\roundtrip-time isn't what causing the bulk of the hit-reg issues, it's the enormous load NS2 puts on the hardware. It'll be the same from 'here' to China, or from 'here' to the basement.

I didn't know it was this rough. I have played for about 2 hours so far... any chance for a refund?

I did a few hours ago, and they gave me an email about FAQ questions, I emailed them again just asking for a refund and no response yet.

Wait for it. They have 1 poor person handling refunds.

    The game is playable if:
    - You are on a fast AND low latency server. This is key to getting a good NS2 beta experience.
    - There aren't too many players - good servers can handle 8-10 at most. Beyond that, there is too much lag.

Stuff you will have to live with (which are acceptable, for a beta):
    - The game still will lag periodically
    - Hit registration is a bit questionable, but if you are on a good server. Its barely acceptable.
    - Crashes happen periodically, but not really that much.
    - The game takes 2-3 minutes to load up the first time you start

Being a few months into beta, I would have liked better performance. If you are in the mood to have fun and help the UW team develop a good game, its ready. If you can't stand loosing a kill due to lag or bugs, move on.

Hey Krieger, sorry your experience was not a good one. We are very focused on working on improving the performance, and fixing some of the bigger bugs, as well as adding additional features. We are also hiring some more programming help to get us there at a much faster rate.

Regarding your refund, the person who handles the refunds is actually our technical artist, so its just one of the many many tasks he has on his plate. Since its the weekend he is also not at work, so you'll probably need to wait until next week for the refund to go through. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I hope you'll check back again at some later date, since the game is improving with every patch.

If you don't need the money I'd say hang out a while, play something else in the meantime and come back a couple months later. NS2 is going to be an outstanding game when it's done.

seriously, you tested ns2 for 2 hours in one release and want a refund? You do know that ns2 is in testing phase right now and gets better with every release?

I must agree, all deals should be final.
Some games costing 60$ has less then 2hours of play in em...

It was way too buggy for me for a long time. I checked back last week and it's running smooth enough now that I can play it without raging. There's still a few hicups sometimes, but it's fairly smooth. Each update now makes it better and better.

FWIW, I'm running an Athlon X3 3.0ghz w/ nVidia 275 GTX and 4 gigs of ram.

You also need to remember that you bought the full, released version of NS2, not just the current buggy, laggy, unfinished beta.

I hear ppl talk about hit registration issues on those forums, but I have not experienced it for the last few builds. So what are they talking about? Maybe the lag compensation where you might have rounded a corner and is safe, but the enemy still kills you because you have not on their screen?
Or are you calling the ft bug hit registration issues?
