and interesting building locations...
Was bored, so I put sv_cheats on in my server and ran around building things in interesting and useful locations. Here's a little bit of what I learned...

ns_bast has the best turret places in the marine base: On top of the light poles, stack around the ring of the support poles, and best of all you can place turrets on the big elevator! Put a line of turrets on, lower the elevator, open the big door, and watch everything on the other side get turned to jello!

Here's another thing I made.

Now you're saying: "WOW THAT'S A LOT OF TURRETS! But wait, the turret factory is right there in the middle! You could just acid rocket it to death and all that money is wasted!"

BUT:

Look up, right next to the resource counter... look closely, it's hard to see... a turret factory! Up there!?

YOU CAN BUILD ON THAT BLUE PIPE! I put a CC in the corner (Above my head) which is damn near impossible to see casually, and since aliens don't have flash lights it'll be neigh impossible to find. You need a jetpack to get up there to build and the pipe is hard to stand on. I also put three siege turrets up there in the corners, making the room a deathtrap.

EDIT: If you want to see the TF, you might want to switch to full-screen browsing, because the white contrasts and makes it hard to see... and just think: You can't find it WITHOUT the turrets shooting!

hm its an ok idea in theory but the time you get jetpacks to build up there it'll kinda be useless

Unless the marines boost each other up there but that would take so long, I'll just keep building on the ground thx.

Thats an interesting idea though, building something in that lighted area and using it as bait while ppl hide and wait for a stupid alien or two to attack it ...

well the first piccy is too dark and the second one too light. with the first you're just begging to be bagged by a hiding skulk. with the second, you remind me of some of my housem8s at university who used to turn their brightness up to the max when playing Quake on our 7 pc house lan so that they could see into every normally shadowy space. I think it's a bit dodgy 'cos skulks won't be able to hide and that's going against the game principles.

hey while your at it admit your cheating aswell the NS gamma adjuster is there for a reason! sure crank up the gamma and loose the entire feel of NS why not just go back and play CS...

I think everything looks cooler bright, but I can't fool with the gamma or my family gets mad.

lets hope its a case of HL and moniter being at different gamme, and he plays with normal gamma in game
  • romanoromano Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4296Members
*shrug* I just use the same config I used in CS. And I've never played with that Gamma adjuster, perhaps I'll check it out :o.

And now we're calling adjusting brightness/gamma cheating? Might I say.. lol?

I'd have to say that's a massive waste of resources... but I guess it all depends on how many nodes the marines controlled.
  • uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
The point was that you can hide crap up there... I think I'll go find more nifty places to put things.

Oh, has anyone tried using the turrets on the elevator to clear out the lower room? I know in some matches, that room will be loaded with aliens.
  • uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
Oh and another thing: On some maps with grated floors, you can sometimes build things below the grates (The node on Ns_Nothing that's on the grated floor is large enough, our commander managed to put a TF down there. I was also wondering: If he put a CC down there, would he be able to use it and walk around under the grate?)

ps use the dit post button

when you use a CC and then exit you come out exactly where you came in

again, most of these things are either exploits or imposible with out cheats

Um...even if you could hide stuff up on that blue pipe, people who use lerk (like me) use cloaking and that hiding spot as the FIRST place to hide in. Just wait there until no marines are about, stay on the pipe, and have a height advantage to spike away at anything below. A few minutes and the aliens have 2 more resource nozzles, a great way to teach the marines a lesson of "Protect your stuff with PEOPLE as well as turrets"

With as many turrets as there were in that pic, it may take a few tries, but it's VERY do-able to ruin that whole installation unless you get some chap to stand guard by it the whole time.
  • uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
well.... lerk spikes hardly do any damage, so you could tear that down if the commander is a moron.

One time on that map we had jet packs and HMG's. I flew up IN that big pipe and built a tf, turrets and a siege to kill the Aliens RT's outside down there. And when we got those 2 resource nozzles we won. It's good to build stuff in weird locations.

And changing gamma isn't cheating just because you haven't heard about ********* doesn't mean you have to whine and **obscenity** about it... I won't tell you the name of the PROGRAM you use to change the gamma in ALL games out there - it was NOT just made for HL and I can show you proof if you want too

er, FYI Ankan, the brightness/gamma in my screenie has nothing todo with the external program you are talking about. Brightness/gamma that bright is easily achieved through normal Half Life variables.

Hehe, the first pick is art.

I've never played using the gamma adjuster thing, I'll give it a go - personally I think it'd be far more enjoyable playing when its dark like in the first pic!

You can NOT look at that picture and tell me that marines don't need turret limits. The lag generated by that room alone could ground Ebay.com to a halt. Not to mention the first ever NEGATIVE FPS count.

That's the kind of game where I leave. Noted it's probably not a real game, but the fact that it is possible is sad.

Guess what this means? Infinite RP... guess where you don't get infinite RP? In online games!

    another in bast

In the refinery room you can build turrets up in on some pipes, on others they sink through to the floor. On the exposed pipe with lava flowing across it is the best place for turrets, and the ledge near it can be used for a comm console.

well to be honest i also cant see any other reason why you would have the game so bright, other than....
    YOU BIG FAT CHEATER!!!

I'll admit that I also play with the brightness settings as in pic 2. Is it cheating? Well... the thing is ANYONE can and many WILL play NS like that. Why should I turn down the brightness and be at a disadvantage to others that turn up the brightness?

Does it ruin the NS atmosphere, yup it does,... and I'd rather play with the darker settings if everyone was forced to play it like that. But... that just ain't gonna happen. It doesn't just ruin the atmosphere it also makes the game alot uglier.

I don't consider myself as a cheater (cause I know alot of others do, Im sure of it) because I play it like that,... what you should ask yourself is how many use the brighter settings? While you think you're hiding in a dark corner in reality half the players can actually clearly see you. It's stupid to play with dark maps... sadly.
