Hmm perhaps you're trying to connect to servers running ns2_summit?
[edit] You shall download it here http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....howtopic=109792
yeah had the same problem yesterday.downloaded ns2_summit and the servers i couldnt join yesterday with the "file not found " error showed then ns2_summit instead of ns2_rockdown as map running.uwe should fix this display bug in the server list.its confusing.
and btw how can it be that ns2_summit (which is the biggest and most complex map out there) runs so much smoother then all official maps...

Currently, you can't download custom maps directly from a server by connecting to it (like would happen in source games). That's why you get the 'file not found' error. You have to manually install the map (check here for various available custom maps) then connect to the server.

to be fair, it's common that severs automatically download everything for you now. much different than needing to goto gamespy arcade for the latest BF1942 file and downloading/installing manually.

Probably because UWE haven't put that much time into the maps yet, as they're more worried with the game running properly in the first place. I think another one of the reasons could be that everything is much further away from each other in summit, which means fewer interactions between entities, which is still quite a performance drag.
But yes, possibly some indication that it's not a default map, give you the option to download?

I'm actually seeing quite a few people (IP's) attempt to connect to my server and fail due to this, they will try again a couple times, but they don't seem to come back with the map and try again. An official announcement about exactly what the error is (you are missing map X), and what it probably means at this current point in time (it's probably summit).
I'm not sure what the message says, but it can't be helping peoples first perception, especially if the natural response it do verify/redownload which is what I would probably do if I didn't frequent the forums.

I was actually surprised about the amount of downloads and players regarding the map. It is fairly common that games download maps by default, and NS2 will some day aswell, but it's good to see that there are still enough people out there remembering the good old days of manual download :p
The map runs better at the moment, because it's barely using any particle effects yet. There are also quite a few spotlights not casting shadows. The offical maps need to push the limits regarding performance, so they can be optimized and run well in the final product, thus the currently lower fps compared to Summit.
I don't know if you ever played Sven Co-Op, but it had costum maps with loads of custum content (models, sounds, textures), and the ingame download was sloooow. So finding the map, download manually, extract, connect again was faster that the ingame download. =P Thats why I got pretty used to the manual installing procedure.
