Hi there,
I dont know if I'm missing here something, but I cant find anywhere an How-To to install a custom Map in NS2.

I thought It d be as easy as downloading it, placing it into the Maps folder and play. However, everytime I try to connect to a server I get the message: file not found.

Please tell me I'm too dumb? :-)

Just copy the map to "steam/steamapps/common/natural selection 2/ns2/maps" and it should work.

    Steam > steamapps > common > Natural Selection 2 > ns2 > maps *map goes here > overviews > other stuff

Mappers often include the correct folder structure in the download. Summit for example simply needs to be extracted in the Natural Selection 2 main folder (C:\program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2). That's why putting it into maps will not work and create a folder mess: Your map ends up being in "ns2\maps\ns2\maps", 2 folders deeper than required. Your maps folder should only contain one subfolder: "overviews". If there is anything else in there (maybe a second ns2-folder) perform a cleanup by deleting the other subfolders. DO NOT DELETE OVERVIEWS OR ANY FILES THAT ARE DIRECTLY IN THE MAPS FOLDER. You would have to verify the cache integrity to get the missing files redownloaded then.

So here's a step-by-step guide (you might want to sticky this if more people got problems with installing custom maps).

    1. Look into the downloaded zip/rar file. If it contains any folders proceed with a). If not with b)

    a) folder structure included

    2. In the Natural selection 2* folder look for the names of the folders contained in the download. You only need to look for the directories that are directly in the zip/rar file, there's no need looking for subfolders contained within them. For example if your download contains a folder named "ns2" this one is found in the Natural Selection 2 main folder. If it contains a folder named "maps" this one is in "Natural Selection 2\ns2". If it contains a folder named "overviews", this one is in "Natural Selection 2\ns2\maps". And well, if the download contains a folder named "Natural Selection 2", I think you will guess this one.

    3. Extract the zip/rar file into the folder that contains the same folders that are in the zip/rar. For example a zip/rar file that contains a folder named "ns2" would be extracted into "Natural Selection 2". A file that contains a folder "Natural Selection 2" is to be extracted into Steamapps, I hope you can figure out the rest. It's important that you extract always in the parent directory of the directory in the downloaded file, NOT in the same directory. For example extracting a zip/rar file that contains a folder named ns2 into ns2 would result in the creation of a subfolder ("ns2\ns2"). That is of course totally wrong. If you do extract in the right folder, no new folders will be created and the files will simply be put into the correct place automatically.

    b) no folder structure, only plain files

    2. Look for folders that contain files of the same type as the files in the archive and put them there. For example .level files and files ending on _skybox.cinematic go into "ns2\maps". .tga and .hmp files likely go into "ns2\maps\overviews".

    *"C:\program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2"

The above steps are actually really simple and fully logical. It only got a little long because I added a lot explanations to make this absolutely fail-save. This makes it look like it is a little complicated, but I tell you, it isn't. (If you immediately get it, you only really need the first sentence of each step).

Or was the real problem that the Galdan didn't figure out that you need to extract the downloaded file at all? No, the Natural Selection 2 and most games don't read zip files. (Some do). Looks like gamers these days got really spoilt by programs like Steam doing everything for them, so they are immediately overstrained if they have to do something manually. (Heck this makes me sound old. And I'm only 23)
