Hello,
Me and some friends thinking of pre purchasing in order to get access to beta.
But our concern is whether or not we'd actually be able to play.
How often are the servers up?
How difficult would you say it takes to get in a good game?
Is it hard to get people to lead the fight ? (commanders i think they are called?)
If it seems like there is a good enough population we would be interesting in prepurchase.
Please give your honest opinions thanks :)

Click the servers link under Developer Tracker to see the current playercount and servers. Please note, though, that playercount spikes right after a patch release and then trickles down to 2-3 full servers.
B179 is definitely playable and fun, but its laggier and more imbalanced than your standard released AAA-title (its a beta after all). There is almost always someone willing to comm (though they may not be good at it). The major downside is that matches are usually very long (1-2 hr on average, I would guess).
Remember that many people are new to the game and the game is changing significantly every fortnight so what you are playing is very much a beta.
Still, I've had lots of great games and don't get disconnected unless the servers crash or are reset.
People are learning and creating new strategies so it's an exciting time to play even if the performance has a way to go, and many features have to be added like Onos, the jetpack, a couple of alien chambers, marine exo-suit etc. If you get stuck or don't know what to do people will give u tips and explanations.
Question about how difficult it is to join a good game...that's hard to answer. Any game can be good if someone goes commander and communicates with his/her team, e.g. give orders, suggestions very frequently. NS2 is a team game just like NS1 and most people want to work together as a team. In the last game I played the marines were going around the map in groups of 4 or 5 or more. On marine side there is always a commander I find. For aliens sometimes I go commander because nobody else is. I suggest you make a private LAN server to get to grips with all the commander UIs before playing in a real game.
There are plenty of them, atleast in the Europe zone :)
Are about 11 euro servers below the ping of 100 for me.
Indeed there are plenty of servers, but there are only 4 or so good enough.
Also a queue when a server is full, so people don't have to spam refresh.
I can't honestly say the game is likely to be fun at the moment, certainly not if you are hoping to play with your friends. Once the servers are fixed and performance is improved then possibly, but until then you will have to put it with very spotty availability of servers.
Personally speaking, I have my ups and downs with the game technically speaking. It usually runs silky smooth when the server is capped at 12 players, but a 6v6 just doesnt feel "big" enough for the maps. I noticed a big server improvement at the start of 179, but for some reason the servers have begun to trickle back to suckage. Like RUben1 said, there are like 4 server (that you'll begin to know by name) that I usually go to and play on. And yes, it will be a refresh battle to try and get into full servers which is kinda annoying. There is also the much needed occulsion optimization that might be arriving with build 180 which will really improve performance. My frames dip during certain spots in the maps which is pretty annoying.
Overall, I dig the game a lot. Part of the reason I think my money is well spent is because I enjoy seeing a game develop right before my eyes. Also, the community actually gets heard once in a while from the developers. They listen to us (although sometimes too much) which is quite refreshing in the game market.
I would buy it for yourself, then see how it runs. UwE is pretty great about refunds so its worth it to just give it a shot. I did about a month ago, experienced pretty bad net problems during game, had a horrible time with combat, but didnt ask for a refund because i saw the potential this game had. After 179 I knew it was worth it. Once performance is perfected then the game will really take off.
