Pustules vs Cysts

Why choose? Why not make the "unconnected" ones be named Pustules (the less threatening name) and "connected" ones be Cysts? That way you don't have to name them connected and unconnected. Kinda immersion breaking plus being such an awkward long word to use in a fast pace FPS/RTS.

p.s. Cant't wait to be on team "Lancer", specializing in eradicating this threat muhaha

Well, such creative naming was attempted with Carbon (hard and therefore used for structures) and Plasma, and now we instead have the boring but practical Pres and Tres.

I'm a fan of this name change. Far better than the "crotch" debacle.

Cyst and Pustule both have that phonetic "I don't want THAT on my dinner plate!" yuk-effect. Cyst is shorter, easier to say, and it still gets that same feeling across. I like it. Cyst FTW!

I like pustule better, cyst is a rather boring name in my opinion.

Besides, I can already see some confusion on the battlefield when players could yell out "assist."

    Assist assist!
    Where's the cyst?
    No, help me darn it!

Calling them cysts makes me feel urpy. This may or may not be the intended reaction.

Something that might have the same effect (feeling/meaning) is: Wart. Wart also seems like something a bunch of jarheads would come up with too. Just a thought.

Cyst is better than wart. I'd much rather see "Cyst" changed to "Seedling". Reasons:

    1) Pustules: not a commonly understood word. Feels like I need a medical dictionary. Still better than Cyst imo.

    2) Cyst: Definitely has the urpy gross feeling to it, but seems out of place as an official term. It makes me think of acne and popping zits more than naturalistic organic growth. Sounds too much like slang. Too close to Starcraft 2's "creep tumors".

    3) Seedling: Gorges help seed the infestation. Alien comm seeds the infestation. Makes far more sense to use this than "hey we need cysts over here". It sounds better to say "I need help seeding heliport comm" or "Can somebody start seeding surface before I drop the hive?" or "I'm gonna seed Crevice up". If a new player hears a player say "We need some more seedlings in flight control", even without knowing what it is, he will know it likely involves growth just from the context and association of the word. It invokes better imagery like tree roots, green plants, and soil. The infestation it produces is the bedrock and soil of the plants the alien comm/gorge make.

You can't really say the same thing for "Cyst" or "pustule". Those sound more like medical abnormalities that need to be destroyed rather than a living, breathing organism. Which makes sense since marines will want to destroy them and probably use slang, but I still think seedling is the all around better choice. Here's to hoping it gets changed, after all, we're still in Beta :)

    OHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

They have improved the Gorge class to allow FARMING!!!!!!!!!!! Wooooooohoooo!
You get to sell kharumpkins as med pack to your fellow team if they give you a bit of PRes in return.

Edit: Actually, that isn't that bad of an idea. What if the gorge could place Kharaa Med packs (Kharumpkins) to allow healing to those who pick it up. These would also use PRes up as well. That way the gorge would have a better way of healing. I think they should put the gorges Healing as a separate move and make the Kharumpkins the alt-fire of the heal. Or it could work the same way as the current infestation does. Where you just look at the floor and heal it. That way gorge heal could stay with his basic offensive move.

what if other aliens could go to the bottom of the gorge and "milk" him to get healing??

Maybe we should rename infestation into "rash" :D .

Made me laugh (at the absurdity of it).

    +1 for Cyst

I think that the "assist"/"a cyst" thing is worth thinking about, but where you cannot actually "cyst" a player, it is not likely a confusion that will persist.(and I have noticed people call for backup more often than assistance, but I don't play on as many european servers)

I like cyst because it is a synonym of pustule, and it uses letter combos that we do not see terribly often, which helps it feel a little more foreign or alien, like the kh in kharaa.

Infestation itself makes me feel a bit urpy, and the idea of this pus-filled cyst oozing a blanket of nourishing corruption until it is finally burst in order to alleviate the infection really keeps the theme of how I felt when I heard about the original pustule. Only now we don't actually have to say "pus" every time, which is out and out urpy lurpy.

most of all though, it is short to type

Never thought of that. While I'm sure the community will learn its way around that, I... could actually see it happening a few times. o.O

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "assist" in a game. It's always "help me with x" or "Lets go to y" and a lot of "fade in y". Never "assist".
  • DeadzoneDeadzone Join Date: 2003-07-03 Member: 17911Members, Reinforced - Shadow
Yes, but people will say "A Cyst" and could be misunderstood that way around :P Still, more of a novelty incident than a problem!

It'd be more problematic if alien commanders could actually drop assistance for aliens.

So when an alien says 'comm drop assist here' you know he actually means cysts.

I see the problems with cyst and assist being minor to null.

Cyst is fine and it is better than pustule.
    (Straighten up your pustule)

    What is that?
    It's a cyst.
    Will it kill us?
No. But we should remove it from our barracks.

It will be interesting if another name comes out in lingo though.

I think the change only came about because of the flaw in Tram and Rockdown's layout. DI being abused to lock off all the RT early game isn't a problem at all on Summit.
Awful names aside, I have no problem with waiting to see if the new Infestation will be an improvement or ruin the kharra's advancement.

Surprise! It ruined it! Now marines can one shot a piece of infestation with a shotgun! This is much more balanced!

No doubt Cysts will take time to balance out, they are more like free PRes currently :P

No matter what name changes UWE brings into their game, I feel pretty confident I'll always be calling Infestation the same thing: Weeds, pure and simple. Just an uppity bit of growth we need to prune back with some good old fashioned fire.

I should probably play Kharaa more...
