Hi all,

Just purchased NS2, with a view to trying the beta, but have the following issue:

When the game starts and every time I join a server I am presented with a constant stream of text in the console (the only way you can see what is actually written is to take a screenshot). Apparently the game is constantly reloading textures.

On joining a game server whilst this is happening I can enter the lobby and see the scoreboard. I have around 60FPS and 60MS at this point, the problem is I cannot join a team and after several seconds I get a warning to say I have a connection problem, then it timesout and I am back to the loading screen. Any thoughts?

    That's a weird bug... Have you tried to verify your game cache through steam?

    Yes, although this process takes less than a second telling me the 2 files it scanned were successful (I get the fealing that 1 second for this process is not correct).

    I am downloading the game again now. Should be done shortly

    The spam reloading of models is fixed after redownloading the game; however, I cannot connect to a server for any length of time. I have the net_stats open, when I connect it runs for about 5-20s, the "Average Recv" then dips to 0. The "Connection Problems Detected...." message appears, and then "Time out".

    Other games on steam work fine (such as Counter Strike).

    I have opened the Ports on my router and tested them using PFPortChecker.

    Any ideas?

    EDIT: I was able to connect to a server hosted by a friend for over an hour, but still cannot stay connect to a dedicated server from the list.

    I reported the exact same issue about 2 weeks ago and didn't get it fixed..In the end I was told it was because my upload speed was too slow..right

    I also have all other games working fine, all the correct ports being forwarded from my router, and a pretty decent broadband connection in the UK.

    You'll probably find if you persist you'll eventually get in a public game. For me it normally goes like this:

    - find a public server that actually has space, players and a reasonable ping.
    - get the connection problems detected message
    - try to rejoin that server, get authentication errors (as your timed out you are ghosted on the server)
    - either wait or join another server that has space, players and a reasonable ping.
    - repeat until it just starts to work

    Eventually when you don't get the message after about 20-30 in to the game, it doesn't happen at all. E.g when i finally get in to a game, i can play for hours.

    But yea it seems only a handful of players get this, and its clearly our computers/connections fault.

    Yeah I am gonna give it a few days then request my money back. As far as my connection goes, I am with the ISP BeUnlimited (let me know if you are on O2 or Be and have this issue, as its not an impossibility that it is something at their end), I have 12mb down and 1.25mb up.

    Blah blah blah it's not a finished product etc etc, but I don't see the point on hanging my £25 on a whim either. If all else fails I can try a friends copy on release to see if it fixed.

    yes im with O2, fail to see why the ISP would cause an issue 'some of the time' though

    I suppose we could rule this out by asking if anyone who doesnt have this issue uses O2 as their ISP?

    boo hoo, they are currently selling the game with a view to allowing people to play test the OPEN beta, I want to play test it, but it doesn't work on my setup, I want my money back (call it false advertising if u want, but on their pre-order list it is the first selling point of the game). If I buy something from the shop that doesn't work I return it. I don't want to hold onto it, hoping someday it will work (I have no reason to believe otherwise). "But you have had the product for several month and are only complaining about it now" - I wish to avoid such an issue. You have your fanboi opinion, I have mine.

    It's not like I bought the game, played it for several weeks then returned it, it literally doesn't work and the fixes suggested on the forum do not work.     Calling people retarded for standing up for their consumer rights really puts my back up, it's not your company, it's not your hard earned money spent on a promise.

    Be Unlimited is essentially an extension of O2 (which is why I asked if it was either), will contact Be and see if they can suggest anything.

    This game is not a beta, thought I'd be kind of an arse and mention that again...

    As for the issue at hand, it would be nice if the engine would be a bit more informative as to what is wrong. "Connection problems..." hardly tells you anything at all. We could be dealing with choke\data-corruption\lag-spikes and whatnot. Maybe the UDP-packets are too large to be properly routed, who knows. I assume you're not having any issues with other games? The only thing that can be said right now is that the netcode is very unforgiving, and cannot deal with less than ideal situations. It'll be a while before that changes significantly I imagine. If you don't feel like waiting for that you're well within your right to request a refund.

    If you want to support the ns2 crew you won't go about needlessly flaming newcomers because they complain about not being able to play the game. In this sense you are just as detrimental to the game as the bug is.

    Having the same problem I can understand why he would be considering getting his money back, it just so happens I played ns1 quite a lot and like the game enough to put up with barely being able to play. A lot of new comers won't, which is understandable. Being a beta is 1 thing, but if you can't even play the beta, why on earth would a sensible person fork over the cash and not ask for a refund? I've been tempted myself..

    Would like to see if you'd post the same response if you were experiencing this issue as well, I highly doubt you would

    It is fine to ask questions why something is not working.
    It is fine to ask for your money back.

    Just remember that if it is a BETA ...then you are a tester.
    and the best thing you can provide is information....by the buttload.

    This does not include whether you like monkeys or not
    but everything about your computer setup all the way up to the pipe.

    Man, if you people are complaining about this beta. You should've played the closed beta for shattered horizon.

    Missing explosions, engine errors upon startup. And black screens 100% of the time. And after the first update I couldn't play it for the rest of the beta.

    The difference being is this beta is open to the consumers. Most companies would never open a real beta to the consumer.

    That's a little bizarre. Most servers run the Summit map seemingly 24/7... do you get that issue when you try and load into other maps or create a local server on one of the other maps?

    UPDATE:

    Tried everything (inc things like disabling firewalls, and different routers), contacted ISP, they say there is no issues at their end.

    Tried around 20 servers. In all cases, I can connect to the server, see people jumping around in the lobby for 5-20s, then all of a sudden "Average Recv" dips to 0, Time out.

    Again can connect to a server hosted by a friend (who lives in Finland), for as long as I want without any issues. Not sure how useful this will be but...

    it surely can't be network issues if its fine on a private server hosted in finland, but having problems with any public server including servers that are going to be closer..

    is there any information I can give? I seriously doubt this is something that will be fixed by another player though..
