Building A Computer

with parts from another
K, I want to build my own computer. But I know that my current one would then be just sit in a corner or something. So I though, hmm, why not just upgrade this one a whole bunch. Basicly I would be getting all the parts for a new computer except:
case and power supply
CD-RW
modem
floppy drive
hard drive

it's a Gateway, bout a year old I would guess and the only reason I have it in the first place is I won it at my Grad night.
Any comments? is it do-able? i would love to do it than build one from scratch, since i'de be saving about 200 atleast, and be able to do it sooner.

Make sure that the powersupply has enough power. The place that built mine put in a cheap one and so it burned out. Otherwise, looks good.

Also make sure the mobo will fit the case. New motherboards usually have an 'interface cluster' with all the ports and junk all lumped in together; even some new cases don't have the proper cutouts for these, and you might have to go all 'Tinsnips, I choose you!' on it if you don't check first.

Alternately (and what I'd recommend), hit a computer show and pick up a cheap $20-40 case while you're getting the mobo/CPU. Usually places will give you a bit of a deal buying them together, and it's actually normally _cheaper_ to buy the case (with power supply included) than it is to just buy the PS on its own.

Any idea how I could find out where computer shows are near me? Sounds like fun, but I don't think any of my friends are geeky enough to come with me. LoL.

If you've got a Gateway case, I HIGHLY recommend getting another one. Antec is great, but a bit more expensive. You can get a great Enlight case for cheap though, and it comes with a PS and fan.

Other than that, it's definitely doable, and I wish you luck.

I've built a bunch of machines before (the dual-boot I'm running now, for instance), so feel free to PM me or whatever if you have any other questions!

stay away from SDRam.... go DDR all the way.

Ive seen friends get a 2 gig processor and put 256 SDRam and wonder why their comp runs slow.

yah, I would sugest getting a case/ps/mobo bundle, especialy if it comes pre put to gethere (this is probably the hardest part and if you have never done this I would sugest doing this)

Also you don't have to go to a comp show just use places like:
    Where to find deasls
Good place, very reliable (not necesarily the best bargins but trustworthy)?
another good place to buy stuff

yah, OL shopping can get you some goodies at decent prices, just remember to look around, ask some Qs here about mobos/cases etc and probabvly even post a link to what you think is best for your price range and ppl will coment

just remember that most of us are biased (I personaly love Mwave b/c I have NEVER had problems with em, got most of my stuff from them)

I get most of my stuff online from www.newegg.com

The case/ps/mobo combos you were referring to are known as "bare-bones" systems.
