Configuring Ns...

I started playing NS about a month ago and if it wasn't for the fact that my HL is bundled with CS, I would have deleted every single CS-file after my first game of NS.

I have a problem though... In CS my fps stays around 99 (on good servers with no loss or choke), but my config is well tweaked. Since I started playing NS I've set fps_max to 75 (doesn't matter, but that's my monitors limit), and still it drops to 20-30 sometimes. Since I'm not sure if the commands are the same for NS, I've been a bit hesitant to tweak my config. Maybe you guys could give me some pointers? All I'm looking for are ways to keep my framerate stable, preferably without any significant loss in graphics quality.

My system below, might help you.

P4 1.3Ghz, 384MB RDRAM, GF4 Ti4200 (I'm running the 40.72 Detonator drivers and I have the refreshrate fix installed)

the HL engine is limited, and they're many models in NS at the same time... it doesn't matter if it's still playable.

well, if you know some tweaking then you should be ok with doing more

go look in the Off topic forum and MonsE has a stikey about this <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (I think it is still there)

    1. Maps are like 84 times larger than CS maps

    2. Maps are at the actual HL limits regarding textures, clipping planes, etc. CS maps arent.

    3. Particle effects

I'd say its your cpu thats limiting your fps in NS. CS isn't NEARLY as CPU intensive as NS is.

I have an old Athlon 1GHZ, with geforce4 4400, 384MB and i get 40-70fps at 1024x768. My problem is my CPU as well.

Hehe, my roommate runs NS on an 450 @ 504MHz (AMD). He's done some heavy tweaking though, so he averages around 10 fps, but you can't tell the differance between the models. I've long been aware that my CPU is a bit of a bottleneck in my system, but stupid Dell used 423-pin CPUs, so I'm gonna need a new chassis and a new motherboard to go along with my next CPU. The cheapest P4 2.0GHz (with the right socket) is around 600 euro... I hate Dell.

EDIT: BTW, thanks for the answers, real quick that was. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
