Making "points" more worthwhile
So, I was reading the below thread, and the flow of the, at the time, 3 posts got me thinking.
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=114757
So the basic idea that I was thinking about two issues with the current system:
a. we are currently incentivizing the kill, not the teamwork that leads to it.
b. points are more or less worthless. Aside from ego boosting, they have no function.
So I got to thinking: What would it take to make a system work where you could convert "points"(recieved for welding, constructing, damaging, killing buildings, kill assists etc.) into p-res? I think it should take a fairly substantial amount of work to get the res(something like 5 or 10 points for 1 pres) and making more things give you points(ie: kill assists, extra points for covering your squadmates if they are under attack a la L4D etc.).
This would accomplish a few things:
1. Increase teamplay/encourage squads: You are effectively getting paid for welding your buddy's armor, or for covering their backs, or building structures
2. Provide an alternative for the controversial res for kills system, as well as standardizing incentive recieved.
3. Give players a sense of connectedness and progression, feeling like they are more directly affecting the world.
4. ?
Potential drawbacks
1. Could lead to too much p-res
2. Would it scale for larger games?(ie 12 v 12)
3. Possibly too much load on the server?
I think it could be a great way to ease newer players into the game, and give players positive feedback for accomplishing goals that further the cause of their team.

However as far as making points into res I think that only supports ppl stealing kills or constructing the last 5% of a building to take points. I think there is too much potoential for producing resentment within the game. Instead I would think, though I do not know, that these points would likely go to a ladder or something just for fun. I see no reason to add a mechanism that converts points to res when there is already a mechanism by which you recive res through actions (which as of now is killing ppl).
